Move from Chicago suburb to Texas

My dad is getting transferred and the whole family is going. I live right down the street from them now and I REALLY love being close to them. I can't imagine being up here alone with my four fur kids :(

A little north of Houston is where they'll be living. They'll have a nice big house on some acres and offered for me to stay there until I got settled. I am very torn about this. My dogs refuse to stay outside in the cold longer than it takes to potty. This will be Barra's first winter so we'll see how she likes it but she tends to follow everyone elses lead so its unlikely she'll be frolicking alone in the cold. Makes for a pain in the rump to have them exercised and exhausted.

Anyone live near or in Houston? How do you like it? Are the folks dog friendly?

I made the move from the Chicago suburbs to dallas 10 years ago. The best thing I've ever done. Texans are super friendly. Moving here has some advantages.....The number one advantage is...No more shoveling snow!!!!

I agree with Sadie's mom, no snow shoveling BUT when we do actually have sleet or ice, most of us do not know how to drive in such conditions. I don't know how it is near Houston, but we don't have seasons here. We have summer & a semi-winter. And I thought I heard Houston was more humid than the DFW metroplex? I could be totally wrong & made that up, it's a little early for me right now & I'm running of 5 hours of sleep. I say come on down! Maybe one of these weekends we can have all of us Texans get together for a big play date. :)

I hate it! Think bible belt and very conservative. If your a bible thumper and love telling people how to live, then you will love it. If not keep your head down and your mouth shut. The large cities are not as bad but I would think very different than Chicago. The schools are terrible. I haven't checked in a while but they were always ranked towards the bottom nationally.

The weather sucks during the summer. 100 plus temp and very high humidity. Mosquitoes that can carry you away and fleas that can suck a gallon of blood at a time. However spring and fall can be really nice. BTW, we still have not cut off the AC. Haven't had to turn on the heater yet.

Yes, most Texans are friendly outwardly. Texas is pretty dog friendly.

Enter at your own risk!

BTW, my credentials are, I am a 50 year old native Houstonian.

Hahaha this cracked me up. I have only been to Houston I believe once & with the traffic y'all have down there I wanted to stab myself in the foot.

I remember when we first moved to Houston when I was a kid, it was like walking into a sponge when you first got off the plane, hot and humid. I'm in Dallas now and much prefer it but I have always loved living in Texas. I moved here from Chicago 20+ years ago. Chicago is a great city but I don't have to shovel heat. :)

Angel bears take your ass back to Chicago if you hate it down here.
angel bears is a native texan per her post, it is the original poster who is moving. Glad you were not the first Texan I met! :)

Thank you for proving my point about our educational system! :lolbangtable:

Don't feel bad, I'm a victim of it, too.

Sorry, I didn't see the posts from this morning.

I do apologize! I knew when I wrote the post, while kind of tongue & cheek, that some Texans would not take it very well. Actually, I thought there would be a couple of more telling me to get my ass out. In my 20's I acted the same way. :)

Well, she asked what is it like in H-town, and you gave it to her:D On the other hand, I have a friend that moved from Seattle to The Woodlands and she LOVES it there. I am in Dallas, but go to Houston for racing, and I am always glad to come home to Dallas.....Humidity is not my friend

I've visited Houston a couple of times and remember it being a nice place, but as others have said. It's hot and one of the most humid places I've ever been.

You would have the Gulf not too far away which would be nice....until hurricane season. ;)

I would never pass up a chance to get out the north and down in the good old south. Tx aint my kinda south but hey, it's better than up north anyday. Yea I'm biased as hell. If your a rebublican you might just love Tx though. Or any part of the bible belt. But the super liberal north aint no better. The christian south passes laws to tell you what they believe is moral, the liberal north passes laws to save you from your own ignorance

Dont make Cane come have a word with you picking on AB.

I live in Chicago and visit Dallas and other parts of TX a few times a year to Hog Hunt. While I admit that winter here is no fun, I hate the heat and Humidity of certain parts of TX. Great state. Do you work? School? If you still have family and friends in Chicago, you may just want to remain here! Heck, it may even snow some in the next few days.

Its called her opinion and she is entitled to it! A question was asked and angle gave an honest experienced answer. You dont have to like it but really, its a forum dont disrespect a senior member that has contributed more knowledge and experiences to this site then most. You could have taken a different aprroach like "i'm sorry ab doesnt like it here but these are the things I like". Approach is everything in life!!!
