Good Morning, I am new to this forum and wanted to introduce myself to everyone. Since last September I have been searchig for a breed that would be both protective and athletic. I put a down payment on a GSD import pup from a respected Schutzlund breeder. Well I discovered the Cane Corso breed at that time. Two days before I was to pick up the GSD pup a friend told me about a breeder who had pups-15 Cane Corso pups !! The breeder had many generations of their dogs there including Sire & Damn. It was love at first sight for us. I mean it was one of those rare moments in life where you know something is absolutely right!! I forefitted the GSD deposit and three weeks later we bought Max home. He is my son's (age 4.5) constant companion. I have owned many Rotts, Akitas, Dobies but they do not compare with this pup, breed and the adult dogs we met. We love him so much they are a unique breed of dog. I am looking forward to gettting to know other Mastiff owners also. If anyone has any advice fell free to do so. I am especially interested in vitamins, Glucostomine and condroitin supplements for Max. He gets a multi vitamin and a chewable 500 mg. Glucostomone a day at this time. The breeer wants him on 2,000 mg of Glucostimine a day. I am feeding him 2 types of kibble-Wysong Epigen 90 and Solid Gold Wolf pup large puppy food. I sometimes mix the 2 or feed seperately. The Epigen costs about $80 per month so I don't think I will keep that up for long. Max is in great health, his coat is luxurious so I think everything is helping. Max has 1.5 cups of kibble in the am, half a cup lunch and 1.5 cups in the pm. We both work so we are paying someone to walk him 2x a day. He is so loyal I can walk him without a leash and he stays tight by me. He seems to have a built in trait of not leaving the yard or our side-he seems to know he is our protector. I am curious to see if this will change when his Testosterone kicks in. I do not allow Max to play-bite in any manner with anyone-especialy my son. No teeth, no jumping is tolerated on my son or anyone. Max is starting to get the message that that behavior is not allowed. Hopefully I will have pics soon. Thanks Dan

Welcome! Can you tell me the calcium and phosphorus levels on the Epigen? I only ask because mastiffs need very specific levels and usually high protein is indicative of levels that are too high and the protein in the Epigen is astronomically high. It may not be on the bag but I emailed them so I will let you know once they reply. While you really don't need a large breed puppy formula the Wolf Cub is fine level wise.

Welcome! Also a cane corso parent. From what i saw on wysong pet food webpage its not grain free but it does not have phosphorus and calcium levels.
No i think the epigen 90 is grain free. It says starch free but looking at the ingredients i didnt see any grains.

Welcome to the board from another Cane Corso owner! Look forward to seeing pics of your puppy.

We use supplements of Glucosamine w/ chondroitin and MSM and Ester C for our dogs.

It is my understanding that you don't have to worry about giving too much Glucosamine. They will pee out what they don't need.

Yea it's not the grains or lack there of that I'm worried about. You know how people always thought it was the high protein you should stay away from when it came to giant breeds? Thats because foods with high protein, tend to have at least high calcium. 60% protein is double that of most foods so it makes me really nervous, especially since it's being mixed with another food. I emailed them but I might just call because I'd really like to know sooner rather than later.

Ugh! It really frustrates me when I take the time to call a company (especially since I have really bad anxiety about calling people) and the people don't know the answer to my questions! I should hear back in 1-2 days.

Welcome! I am new as well. My Corso is 6 months old and she is doing great. I know what you mean by love at first site. We put down our Yellow Lab 4 years ago and I didn't think I would ever be able to love another dog again. For the last year my husband has been warming me up to the idea of adding a dog to our family. After much research we felt the Corso was the right breed for us. We found a small breeder about an hour away and arranged a visit to meet her and her dogs. We were interested in her female champion that she was going to breed this past March. We were dead set on a 8 week old puppy from this female if the breeder approved us. Well, all that went out the window once we met a female puppy she had that was 4 months old from a prior litter. We left the breeder not being able to stop talking about this puppy named Crickett. We fell in love with her personality, her beauty and temperment and she was ours a week later. Now, two months later we are even more thrilled to have her. She has filled our hearts with that special love again. She passed puppy training with ease and is great with my two little nephews. She is submissive and knows her place in our pack.

We feed her Taste of The Wild and give her Ester C. She does well on this food and seems to really like it. I can't take her anywhere without someone stopping me and asking me about her.
Best of luck with your new addition!
Tina

So I got my answer from wysong and I'm astonished. The epigen 90 formula is absolutely not appropriate for mastiff pups so please do not give him any more of it. The absolute highest calcium a giant breed pup should have is 1.8%, although preferably between 1.4 and 1.6%. The wysong has 5.9% calcium.

Hi and welcome.
Another Corso addict, what kennel did you get your baby from may I ask?
Can't wait to see pictures.

Good Morning: I have owned Max for almost 5 weeks. He is now 13 weeks old and weighs 32 pounds. When I transitioned him to only the Epigen 90 he had horrific diarrhea. So that is no longer on his dog food list. The Solid Gold wolf cub seems to be the best so far. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for another high quality dry food please let me know. Thanks, Dan
