Hello,

My name is Cassidy and I just recently adopted a 4.5month old male English Mastiff. He is an absolute joy and already so well behaved for being so young! We haven't gotten an official weight on him, but he is around 55lbs and standing at 26" tall. He seems to be pretty healthy overall, but since he is new to our home and we haven't had a Mastiff before, I do have a few questions about their general demeanor. I know they are super awkward at this age, and so I'm trying not to be very concerned, but his gait is very funny when he runs around. He almost hops sometimes and it seems like he just can't make his legs go right. Is that just because of how big his paws are in comparison to his body? Also I've noticed that he constantly has a little bit of drainage coming from both eyes on top of a dry nose that I just can't seem to get rid of. I have tried bacitracin, vitamin E, and A&D ointment, but nothing seems to be helping. His paw pads are also very dry and he chews on them a lot. I've ordered some organic soothing balm for his paw pads and nose and am hoping it will provide him some relief. As for the eye drainage, is that common or something I should be concerned about? It's never a lot and his eyes don't seem to be irritated or goopy, just a tiny little eye boogers that I always wipe away. I know they are very slobbery dogs, so I didn't know if the eye boogers were another part of the Mastiff package!

Thank you for reading! I'm sure I sound like a very overactive parent, but I just want to be sure that I'm providing him with the best of care!

Welcome aboard~ Pics are necessary of your boy. What is his name?

Can you get a video of him walking from the back and front?

What does the eye drainage look like? Yellow? White? Constant?

Sometimes the eye drainage can be a result of the food. What are you feeding him? I would avoid using bacitracin (this is an antibiotic cream which it probably isn't an infection) and A & D ointment on the eye area.

Try musher's secret for his paws or organic coconut oil for his paws. Chewing the paws can be an allergic reaction to the grass or something in the grass.

Apply pure olive oil to the nose to keep it from drying out. It works wonders! I put the olive oil in a small bottle and squeeze a generous amount on Titan's nose and if he licks it, it's good for him!

I remember how gangly Caesar was for at least a year. My guess is that is the normal part of being all legs and no body yet. He would hop around like a bunny and curl his back like a cat when he ran. Totally the 'geeky' kid at the park. Got lots of laughs from onlookers.

I would agree that the eye goop and paws are from an allergy. Have you checked his webbing underneath? If it is really red or brownish is could likely be from chicken. Our vet thought it was an allergy as well so we switched him to Orijen Red/Six Fish and it took a 3-4 months for his paws to get back to normal and for him to stop chewing them. If you do go off chicken, you have to switch no only their food, but their treats as well. Often chicken fat is used as a binding and flavor agent.

His name is Cyrus. The eye drainage is white/clear, not yellow or indicative of an infection. I haven't been using bacitracin on his eyes, just his nose to try and keep it moist. He just switched from Purina puppy chow to dog chow (I did a slow transition to avoid upsetting his digestive tract). I ordered some organic coconut salve for his paws, just waiting for it to arrive. I will try the olive oil and see how that works! His paw pads and webbing don't look or seem irritated when I touch them. Other than his dog food, we don't really give him treats or people food because I've read how sensitive they can be to different foods. I will get a video of him tomorrow and post it!

Also, what do you guys recommend for Heartworm prevention? I believe he was on Triflexis, but I've read that some dogs have had a lot of problems with it. I had a German Shepherd for a year that I raised for Pilot Dogs and she was on Iverhart and did very well, but I didn't know if that would be a good way to go since he is such a big breed.

Thank you!

What a handsome man you have there!

BTW mastiffs are known to have allergies to chicken and grains in dog food. I am not sure what brand you are feeding but you may want to check the ingredients.
