Newbie and Seeking Info on Neo's

Greetings everyone. I am new to the forum and have a question. We lost our Saint Bernard a couple of weeks ago and really miss our baby girl. We are considering a Neapolitain Mastiff puppy. Can anyone give me any inside tips on the breed? We have been doing a lot of reading online about them, but that is nothing like talking to those who own them.
Thanks in advance for the info.

Welcome aboard and I'm sorry for your loss. We have a few Neo owners and I'm sure they will give you some tips.

Welcome and sorry for your loss. I have a 7 1/2 month old neo right now but have owned neos in the past. They are great dogs. They tend to be ridiculously affectionate with thier people usually attaching to one person in particular. They are a true cling on dog, following you everywhere. They can be strong willed and stubborn, but are extremely smart. Can be dog aggressive, but mine would tolorate other dogs that showed no dominance. Super natural guardians, but will accept people you accept. Just socialize, socialize, socialize and be consistant and positive with training. Mine is a hand full right now, he has a high prey drive. Love the breed. I'll always have at least one or two or three!

Hi Doc,

I'm a new registered member to the forum as well, although I was lurking about for quite awhile. I posted a thread over in the Neapolitan with pics of my 9 month Neo, he's my first mastiff so I'm not sure how many insider tips I can give, but I would be happy to answer any questions you might have for a Neo puppy owner going through the motions.

Our Neo is almost 18 months. She is crazy loyal and very attached to me though is beyond tolerant of my three children 10,8 and 4. As a puppy she was a bit nippy with the kids, but she's grown out of that. I cannot stress enough how crucial socialization is. They tend to be frightened of like, everything. Her most recent fear is men carrying chuckits. We all work very hard to expose her to things she's frightened of to try and reduce the fear. Ours is very trainable I don't know if that holds true for all neos, but I bet it's pretty common. Know that these big dogs are slow about everything. They need to grow slow, I have found she heals slowly (after being fixed and little scrapes and things) and don't get me started on switching foods! We are transitioning to adult dog food and it takes forever for her body and tastebuds to adjust. But if you know this going in, then you'll have a higher tolerance. I am sorry for your loss and while your little girl is irreplaceable a new soul will help soften the blow. Enjoy!
