Question about wormer

Was wondering if $300 is a bit much to worm my five, its drontal or same thing but different brand maker, from my vet, it just seems high to me. Im pretty sure its round, thanks to my not so wonderful cats , i wormed the cats at the start of the month cause i found a small cat puke with worms in it, yes gross i know, even grosser when you find it at 5 in the morning while your still asleep, you become wide awake real fast lol, so one of the dogs puked up some worms this morning and i am not quite sure who but they are all getting done. So the stuff for just round worms is alot cheaper and has to be repeated in 2 weeks, so the other stuff is a broad spectrum just incase its not round but its pricey, it just seems a bit much, works out to be about $60 per dog as they all weigh pretty much the same at 120-130lbs, sounds a bit expensive to me but im used to worming pups that weigh 20lbs lol not 120 , OUCH is all i have to say!

I'll add that round worms are pretty distinct. Think funky spagetti noodles. Apollo had them once *sigh*. so if you're sure its roundworms you may be ok going with just that.

Sounds about right for that dosage of Drontal :( If you only have roundworms however, you could use Strongid-T (pyrantal pamoate, I believe is the generic form). Only gets rounds and hooks, but much cheaper if that's the only parasite you're facing.

You can use Flagyl...cheaper, and very effective. I can get you correct dosage amounts for dogs.... you can also use it for Giardia so its good to keep around all the time. If your interested Ill get you the info.

flagyl is not a general dewormer and should be used with caution in puppies. Dosage is important to get right.

strongid ( pyrantel pamoate) is for hooks & rounds and is the cheapest product to use. You dose by weight and repeat in 3 weeks.

if you are worming for tapeworms you need either plain praziquantal or a combo product like drontal. There is no need to deworm for tapeworms unless you are seeing them in the stool.

You can also use panacur to worm the dogs for hooks, rounds and whips - it does not worm for the type of tapes that dogs get though here so dont be misled.

Like ruthcatrin mentioned above a product like Sentinel Spectrum or Iverhart Max given monthly ( to the dogs only) will worm them each month for hooks, rounds and tapes. The sentinel will also worm them for whips.

For cats there is a great topical product called profender that worms for hooks, rounds and tapes

$300 is too expensive IMO - you can do it much cheaper.
Do you have heartworm up there ?

also a sidenote - anything with praziquantal should not be given to pregnant bitches ever...

Well im pretty sure they are round worms seen enough of them out of pups to last me a lifetime, just never had an adult dog have them ever. I just never thought they had worms, they do not look poorly in any way and never see anything in their poops, i pick up the yard twice a day, im kinda ocd about that lol, so im thinking the cats ate an infected mouse or bird and they got it from them or they ate an infected mouse the cat left laying around most times he doesnt eat them, stupid cat. And when did wormer become so expensive?? What do you think i should do, just the roundworm meds or do the broad spectrum , i have not seen any ricey segments on there butts ever, also we do not have many cases of the other worms like hook or whip etc and heart worm is not prevalent in canada so im pretty sure its round, i just want to do the right thing not just cause it is the cheapest but cheap is good right now. I was kinda hoping you would answer thank you :)

Just deworm the dogs with pyrantel or panacur and repeat in 3 weeks.
I would deworm the cats for tapes as well - especially if they hunt.

Hooks and roundworms are pretty much everywhere...the dogs/cats/wildlife shed the eggs in the environment and the dogs and cats become infected that way.

For tapes the animal has to ingest a flea ( easier to do than people think) to become infected with them. The flea is the intermediate host.

The more i think about 300 bucks the more i think i will go with the strongid and worm a second time as you said, it has to be cheaper but up here where i am in boonieville they can charge what ever they feel like, which is probably a 300% mark up on their products.

Tapes are nasty, and need to be retreated after 2-3 weeks. I imported a puppy that was infected. Nasty I tell you.

praziquantal is expensive.

No heartworm is not found up here to often, its more of people taking their dogs on vaca to a place that has heartworm and brining it home with them, the mosquitos dont seem to carry it up here , i guess cause they all get killed off from the cold temps in the winter

And no fleas either as the climate is not right for them here but i have heard people in town say they have fleas but i have never had any in 10 years here, ticks yes but no fleas.

Thanks for all the replys, i just wanted to see if there were cheaper ways, i never had to go to the vet for that kinda stuff, we had a pharmasave in cloverdale that sold all the stuff for small and large animals like shots, wormer , antibiotics etc. When the vet receptionist said 278 i nearly fell on the floor lol what is it gold plated geesh talk about being robbed in plane sight

Kryten was about $100 to dewormer the last time he had tapeworm and I think he was 160-170 lbs at the time.

I've seen 1 flea in over 30 years of pet ownership. I was also told that there is a type if tape worm that can be contracted by ingesting contaminated feces (rabbit) if I remember right.
