Questions about Pecking Order & new schools of thought & the jargon that goes with it

I'm a simple person...I try not to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Rule #1 with my dogs I call the shots. I'm firm but fair. I can give treats and be "posisitve" but I not afriad to give a correction.

This is what im saying call it alpha call it what you want....I call the shots...I'm not oppressive and most of the time I think Kronos thinks me and him are buddies but he knows when I say No! Its the end.. im not sure anyone doesnt train like that....unless your my neighbor with 2 toy poodles...

I've never heard of someone doing this, but, you know, there are shitty trainers out there - positive or non-positive. You have to find a good trainer.

He posts on here, thankfully not frequently, but this is exactly the sort of thread he likes to use to tell us all how horribly abusive we all are so I'm sure he'll be along eventually.....

Oh no.. no.. no, he didn't.. where's my clicker :razzberry:

Some where in the middle (positive training & correction) is the best place to end up to have a balanced pup. Science hasn't "proven" anything, they offer opinions, and people choose to present them as "fact".

See, this is what I was talking about. Does this need to be pointed out? Is there really any mentally stable human on earth that owns a dog and lets them "call the shots"?

Right, but that is the scientific process. That is science. If you choose to follow science, then you should follow the most recent and most accepted methods, otherwise you are following outdated methods.

If you choose to ignore science, then you're just believing in magic. I've never seen anyone effectively train a dog with magic, Cesar Millan included.

LOL! Brad I'm not sure how often you get out of your fort, but have you been the around the average dog owner? Go to any pet store or event involving animals, and see the numerous text book examples of owners letting their pets "call the shots."

Dude, I'm like freaking Bill Nye the science guy & the Mastiff whisper' combined.. I don't need no magic.. science would tell you that you popped out of a rock or came from a monkey also.. believe that? #Dont-Need-No-Clicker

Well, I have no idea who Caesar Milan is.
Maybe his followers should watch less TV & spend some quality time in the fresh outside air learning WITH their dogs instead.
Even his name sounds like a cheap designer knock off, I just can't take it seriously.
Just like you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet, well just cuz it's on TV doesn't make it good.
TV is geared for an uneducated public that's 1/2 brain dead.

And yes, my "boss" makes sure I know each & every day, that I should *follow the chain of command*, & makes sure to tell me they are my superior. Ummm Hmmm. Whatever. Most jobs suck, mine is no different, that's why it's called work.

And also, yes Brad, I know PLENTY of people who let their dogs call the shots.
Probably most people I know with dogs in fact.
Unfortuneatly this is one of the (many) reasons why there are so many skrewed up dogs.

Dog owner stability???-HA!-that is a state of mind or a theoretical that people with free time & education have time to ponder.
If we are talking about the general public as dog owners...
I work with the public-what you may deem "stable" is much more of a luxury than you think.
Times are harder especially now & unfortuneately the world doesn't evolve as fast as would be good
-- even for our own species.

Most of the general public is day to day & hand to mouth & still do not spay/neuter & thinks Old Roy is great dog food.
They also believe that it is the school's job to teach their own children how to read or behave-
So assuming they believe this about their own children, training their pooch with the most scientifically new method just ain't in their game.

And LOL, I do not *ever* assume I am smarter than my pooch, opposable thumbs ain't everything, & I know damn well my own cats conspire, though I am not sure if it is for or against me, yet...now if I could just find that tin hat!

Trust me, you're a happier person not knowing who Ceasar Milan is.....

You guys are thinking about this too surface level.

They are still *choosing* to let their dogs control them. They may let their dog's run their lives, but who wears the leash and collar? Who provides the food? The dog's aren't literally walking the humans on leash.

Hell, my dogs run my life - because I have 20 of them. We can't go on vacation... or even be gone from the house at dinner too long as we have to be home to let the dogs out to potty before bed - which is a long process when you have a lot of dogs. This doesn't mean my dogs are "in control" - I still provide them food, give them safety, and walk them on lead.

If I was not "in control" my dogs would probably, literally, eat me. I am way out numbered... But I never do anything to consciously show them this. I just provide for them. Figuratively speaking, I never have "beat my chest" and exclaim "I'm alpha". I never have to *show* them I'm "in charge" - they know it, they know where their food and water comes from.

I wish people would focus less on a status and more on just training their dogs. When you're training your dog you should be a team, not a superordinate and subordinate.

Wow....Brad your response sounded like that guy. Please don't be that guy :(

You should have specified which "level" you were referring too... Second no one is stating anything about "status." I don't have to swing my nuts around or make noise to call the shots. My dogs and I are a team and as a "team lead" my job is to guide our team to be the best they can be.

You know there's extremes on both ends. Again I think people make things more complicated than they need to be. Forget the fancy terminology of alpha, omega, gamma, beta, lamb, cappa, etc. Stop bickering over which training methods are best for the canine psyche. Use common sense and work with your dogs.

Whether you are successful or not your dogs will speak for you.

Wtf does status have to do with whether my dogs are well behaved or not???

Is this directed at me? If so, it's very confusing to me. I thought *I* was the one arguing status has nothing to do with training dogs... But this comment seems to imply you think I am saying the opposite?
