Raw Diet for puppy 101

Not feeding pups bones < that always makes me laugh. For my working GSD's, they would help themselves to bones inside your arms/legs, if not provided with them for food lol

And at the 16wks mark, nowt like a marrow bone to get rid of all the milk teeth that fall out in masses at this time! as opposed to my shins/ankles/shoes/furniture.

My dogs were a bit stand offish with offal raw. Now, toss them a heart, and its gone in seconds.
I like the idea of not feeding the day before the change. Nowt like hunger to retune a appetite.

I have never experienced offal causing runny poo here. But only feed it twice a week.

So for the most part, Bane has been to exceptionally well with all types of meat that he's been trying out including chicken, turkey and some beef as well as the bones. However, when supervising the chow-down, I noticed he takes 3-4 bites of a chicken/turkey bone and it's gone! The BF is worried sick that it can cause him stomch problems- although, we have't had any issues with it yet, thank god. However, I am taking the bone out of his mouth to avoid food aggression a few times during the meal but do all pups chomp down and swallow? What can go wrong with him eating too fast? He swallows these bones in seconds!

General consensus is that you shouldn't be feeding so much variety so quickly. You should start with chicken and feed it gradually increasing the meat to bone ratio until you are at 90:10 with solid stools. Then after a week of solid stools you should introduce another type of protein in a tiny amount to the chicken meal, increasing the proportion until you are at 100% of the new protein at a meat to bone ratio of 90:10 with solid stools. Once you have a couple of proteins you should add organ meat slowly until stools are solid again. Ratio should be Meat:Bone:Organs, 80:10:10.

Don't be concerned about them wolfing down food. Remember that they don't have molars like we do to grind food into a paste. They tear chunks and swallow them whole. If he swallows something too big he will regurgitate it and chew it a bit more before swallowing again. No problem for him whatsoever. To slow him down, feed larger chunks which will force him to work on them a bit more. If a loose bone falls out with no meat then take it away and toss it in the trash.

Check his stools. With my pup in the beginning there was a LOT of undigested bone in a mucous sack. I gave digestive enzymes for a few weeks to help speed up his body's digestion of the bone and now he is fine with any bones.
