*sigh* Help, opinions, suggestions. (breeds)

Hey there everyone, long time no see.

I need a little help as it seems my indecisive personality keeps getting the better of me. Please don't read indecisive as flaky, as that's not how I'd like to be portrayed and that is not what I am. I am deeply dedicated and very research-minded which has led me through my past 5 years of researching dog breeds until my eyes are tearing and my fingers bleeding from being hell-bent on the computer, searching for whatever information I'm looking for. I've researched everything from Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Catahoula Leopard Dogs to Fila Brasleiros and Cacuasian Ovcharkas. My heart is really with the Fila. I attended the 2011 CAFIB show and met Dogman (I know he's on here) and a lot of other great people in the Fila world. I could no doubt handle a Fila but my lifestyle just isn't a good fit and it may not be for a long, long time.

Mastiffs are my heart dogs, but choosing just one breed, especially one to take the place of a Fila is not easy. The breeds I've been most attracted to are the Presa, Corsi, Tosa, and Boerboel. I think by explaining my situation and lifestyle to you, I might be able to hear some good advice and a push in the right direction. I'd happily own any of these breeds as I think they are all magnificent. I'd probably fall in love with each in their own way, given the chance to own each one respectively. I am young, strong, emotionally stable, loving, firm, with a dominant personality. I work around horses so no dog can get under my skin, trust me. I am at the barn 4 days a week around horses, other dogs, and a family of a team there. Strangers do come and go as well as children as far as the barn goes. Home life would be fairly quiet, company would mostly consist of close friends, not a huge circle of random people. I'm not a people person, trust me. I'm active and work out regularly and spend my time on a farm.

What I need and want is a dog that is not dog aggressive or at least manageable with dogs he is raised with as the dogs at the farm are consistent. I don't care about getting along with strange dogs on the street, I wouldn't prefer that. I don't want a breed washed of its protective instincts. I am not one of those people that believe an untrained dog won't protect. But I do know most breeds out there boast a standard of protective qualities but all those dogs can do is run. Protective to me is not just territorial over property, but would do something under a dire situation. I am up at the barn late and typically alone. I can train a dog and this won't be my first but I will admit I have never owned a molosser, but I have not a single doubt in my mind I can handle it. I just want a ridiculously loyal, affectionate companion that can survive around a small group of familiar dogs and around livestock, and be protective should the situation warrant it. Anyone have any suggestions? I will answer any questions I just don't want to let this thread get more long-winded than it already is. :)

This isn't really helpful and you might not like the answer but sounds to me like you want a Kangal lol.......I suppose it is a form of Mastiff if you want to look at it like that. Otherwise I would go for a Boerboel from what you have said above.

I would go with presa first and then corso. I only have experience with a corso but from what I understand presas are very athletic and eager to please. My corso is extremely loyal; I am her world. She is very protective of me and her home, but I never seen her back her bark up with bite so I can't say for 100% that she would attack an intruder (but she also still young, 12 months). I think the boreborel is also a good option, I just dont know that much about them.

Well for a protection dog you will need to do a ton of breeder research for most breeds. So many or soft as shit. And so many have huge swings in temp. If you found a hard cc or hard bb or hard presa any would work. Given the line has a proven drive to fit the need. That is the benefit of a fila. Unless really screwed up, even a soft fila will give an initial bite and a hard one at that. That being said, If I was doing all the research to find a hard dog, I would find a old school neo

you guys are gonna hate me but i LOVE chesapeke bay retrievers! they are bigger than your average lab and show about the same inteligence but also have a pretty decent protective drive without being overboard. seen a few in person and man are they pretty dogs.. im surprised that they arent more popular. I have just about mispelled and corrected every single word I wrote so I know its time for me to go to sleep.lol

Have you researched the Argentinian Mastiff, the Dogo Argentino? Have a lot of the characteristics you say you are looking for and just amazing dogs. I know some good breeders that have consistent lines. If you couldn't tell,Dogos are my other heart breed!!I have had Dogos on and off for over 20yrs.

Of course I would say CC, but what has been said is true, research the breeders, their dogs and what has been produced.

The boerboel. Good with other dogs generally. Very protective of property and its people. Good with kids if raised around them. I dont personally know about livestock but my little boerboel is very ... perceptive as to what i want if i need her to be nice and mind her pees and cues she knows without a whole lot of direction. I am a stay at home mom so we have a lot of time to bond and train. Boerboel is a farm dog straight up.

Sorry can't help with the breeds you listed, I am a true EM owner. My boys are extremely well behaved on our farm and get along well with all of my animals, horses, cats, chickens, hubby, etc! Sweet, loyal and protective when necessary of me, our animals and our property and well mannered.

Although I am new to the forum, after reading your requirements, I would also suggest a Kangal. Its a breed that at least on paper answers most of your demands. And speaking of Kangls, what about this less know breed:
