Sochi Strays

Strays are a common occurrence in Russia, since pet and guard dogs are rarely fixed.

This is appalling. A "pest control" service for dogs? "God forbid something like this happens at the actual opening ceremony. This will be a disgrace for the whole country."??? Seriously? This whole thing is a huge disgrace (or should be).......300 dogs a month collected and killed? How about they start collecting up and killing the owners?

I don't think you fully understand... These dogs are not abandoned. They are generations of feral dogs. It is sad, however, since the stray problem in Russia has been on-going for decades, it is impossible to solve it quickly by any other means. Since these dogs are not vaccinated and carry all sorts of diseases, the last thing they want to happen to have it bite someone.

Life for dogs in other countries is very different from life in the US.

In Argentina I saw lots and lots of dogs roaming from house to house... loose... to "own" a dog didn't seem like it was in the human vocabulary there. There were just dogs "around".

They were doing a story on the radio about the Sochi Strays today - sounds like they're well fed... so lots of garbage to dine on. Some were even thought to be of "good pedigree" (?). Not sure where those came from.

But... Russian authorities COULD have used this as a good learning event and community builder - bring in some rescue groups, educate the masses on "responsible" dog care & supervision... get some volunteer vets in to provide vaccinations and other treatments... and find HOMES for at least some of these dogs (at least on an anecdotal level, so they LOOK like they're trying). I totally understand that a long-term problem will not be solved by rescue and volunteers alone... so some (many) euthanizations are expected... but they're POISONING these dogs, and leaving some of them to die in ditches and alleys. That doesn't seem very humane or even safe to me, either.

The Olympics in Sochi have been in the planning stage for YEARS. It's not like someone said "Hey, let's have the Olympics in Sochi NEXT WEEK." If the stray population was going to be a problem, I don't understand why it wasn't addressed a long time ago, instead of waiting until the week before opening day. Things like this make me ashamed to say I'm a member of the human race.

I just saw this post. I have been following the Sochi culling for a couple weeks now and the way they are KILLING these dogs is cruel. They are shooting them with a poison that causes the dogs to suffocate to a painful death. Because of this alone I refuse to watch anything to do with the olympics. Some say the lungs fill with fluid and they drown others say it paralyzes the lungs and heart, either way it is said to be very painful. How many of these dogs that have been killed could have been someone pet that had just wondered away from home?

They need to adopt the Turkish law of catch inoculate neuter/spay release. Eventually the stray population will fall to an acceptable population.
