Sores all over her face from scratching so much...

So my 8 month old Fila may have some sort of skin problem?? She scratches her face so much she has big sore that bleeds all the time from her scratching the scab off. She also will lay down and just rub on her face with her paws. The skin around her eye and the side of her face is all scratched up and irritated. Her body is fine and i keep her nails trimmed up but her face is terrible!! Will be getting her to the vet ASAP but just wanted to hear anyone's input that has a mastiff???

I don't have a mastiff, but I have a dog (pit mix) that struggled with allergies for a long time. Her face (around her lips, especially) and her neck were the worst. We eventually had to put her on allergy shots. After about 2-3 years of that and still suffering with remaining reddness and irritation, we put her on a raw diet. It is amazing how much better she looks! I just mentioned it to my husband today. Occassionally she will have a small flare up but we are able to keep it under control the majority of the time.

When it was at its worst, we wound up in the vet's office trying to prevent a staph. infection from all of her scratching. I hope you can find something to help you. Benedryl might be worth a try till you can get into the vet. If it will help you keep her from scratching some, it might be worth it.

Good Luck!

I agree with Paws, sounds like it might be an allergy. Ebony used to get bad itchy ears and face which we eventually were able to atribute to a wheat/corn type allergy. As with Paws, we switched her to a bland raw diet and her ears and face cleared up quickly.

Allergies it sounds like. Put her on a food like California Natural or a grain free kibble and see if that helps too.

It could also be insect bites - they tend to irritate patches of skin. When was she last flea treated? Are there flies around? Try a specialized dog insect repelant to see of it starts to clear. Could also be allergy but that would flare up everywhere unless it is a contact allergy to something she's been sniffing.

Oh and diet could most definitely contribute. Many dog foods have artificial colours, flavours and wheat and grains can also cause a problem. I am very much an advocate for a raw food diet.

Thanks!!! I got her to the vet and she is doing MUCH better! Her face is completely healed and thanks to the steroids she is not scratching or rubbing anymore. We are thinking seasonal allergies or a food allergy and i am actually doing research to start her on a raw food diet. Any suggestions?

I would go with the Prey Model Diet. All raw and no veggies. Dogs are carnivores.

A lot of people have had great success with skin problems putting their dogs on raw. I didn't but I still think it is the best diet for dogs. Once you learn how to do it, it is even cheaper than bagged food. BTW a freezer is a must. Here is a link that has some raw feeders that try to be helpful.
