The Angus Rally Thread...

Yes, it's happening. I am going to be working on Rally with Angus. We started this morning and it was pretty comical.

He needs something to mentally stimulate him, which Rally will. It will also work on his obedience, which he needs.

He is just such a different dog than Thalia. Thalia is quick and upbeat whereas Angus is much slower, and purposeful in his actions.

The first 4 commands we are working on are 'heel,' 'sit,' 'swing' and 'front', which is pretty well where I started with Thalia.

Working on his 'swing' command... he completed his front command and I was trying to lure him into a swing with a treat and he just starts batting at my hand with his big paws trying to knock the treat out. >_<

Pictures and videos to follow later on today!

I need someone to help take videos! I tried propping my phone up, but it doesn't capture things very well. It is the most ridiculous and cute thing ever though... I feel kind of bad laughing at his Rally attempts though >_< I am going to try to get some videos tonight after work.

Really shitty quality, but you get the idea. Our downstairs tenants come home, which is why he suddenly gets distracted.

When we went to rally classes, our instructors suggested go really heavy with the treats while training. As in every little action that was right. He's looking at you? treat. He's sitting? treat. He's on a pretty close heel? treat.
They also were constantly yelling at me to move faster, not let her actions slow us down. That way I was in control, not the dog.
Even though the pawing at you is a big no-no, I gotta tell you it's adorable.

I know, right?!?

When I started with my girl Thalia (we're starting to work on Excellent signs), I treated every little thing. Angus gets lots of treats too, but they tend to get caught up in his jowls and he ends up dropping them LOL

I'm confident that he'll get better with practice.

Well, Angus fell off my radar for a bit. Aside from his rehab and nosework, I haven't done much with him. In 2016, I would like to get Angus more involved in things and i definitely want to spend more time training him.

Here's a short video of Angus practicing swing left, front, sit in the heel position, down... It's pretty comical.

He's getting it. It takes times. He's definitely got "front". I always say "Good (fill in the blank)". Like "Good sit!" So they hear the command again & again. Also a heads up: there are times when there's not a halt after the swing. It's swing left, forward without sit. You'll lose points if he sits. He's getting it, though. Ruby gets it, she just doesn't want to do it. I think the arthritis in her legs is getting worse & sit/up/sit/down/up etc. is really bothering her. I'm thinking of starting Cobi, since he's such an in-your-face kind of dog.

Thanks! Yeah, I've been doing rally for 1.5 years with my other dog. If the weather was nicer, I'd get outside to actually set up a course with my signs, but the cramped kitchen will have to do for now!

I love it! Rally was so key to Yogi and me developing our working relationship, far more than obedience or any other activity we did. I just love it and Angus will get it in no time!
