oh my goodness...we hear this all the time, too! uummm, yep. i do know how big she's going to be....kinda why we picked her. ;) i really hate hearing...you have to be careful with these dogs around kids. we have 3 sons...and she loves them and protects them like they are her own kids. our oldest boy had a friend spend the night and i overheard him say...'I love your dog! you just have to get to know her.' LOL! so true! i really want to tell people that , yes, she could bite their face off in one chomp, but really she's more likely to kiss you to death and want to sit on your lap on the couch. ;)

I love your son's comment!

I usually just have people assuming my Neapolitan/Bullmastiff girl is a Pit, Pit mix, Boxer mix, Lab mix, or Sharpei mix... Also they usually assume she's a boy, but she is wearing my Male Dobe's collar right now (untill I get her a new girly one at the dog show next weekend) so it doesn't really bother me.

Oh and my husband once told a woman Branka was a Mastiff... she said "she must be mixed with something". He said "She's Neapolitan Mastiff and Bullmastiff" and the woman said in a snotty tone "so she's not a REAL Mastiff" um ok... those are fake Mastiff breeds? Obviously she has no clue how old Neo's are?

A little OT, but I once had a woman sit there and argue with me that my Doberman was mixed with Chocolate lab! He's a red, both parents are AKC CH and 3 of his littermates are AKC CH, he has a gorgeous show crop and is docked, I paid an crazy amount of $ for him from one of the top Dobe breeders and judges... but hell, what do I know? He must be part lab...

Oh what we do without the know it alls at Petsmart!!THAT
Our last journey to Petstupid was a very knowledgable experience for me. I learned that my Fila Brasileiro was named after the Fila tennis shoes, that was a new one! I was also informed after telling a couple her breed, that I must have been lied to as she looks just like their Redbone?! hmm, really! While in a sit at in the toy aisle, Flower did the bob and weave as some idiot tried to pet her without asking, his response "damn, that is a scaredy cat dog". Um, no, she doesn't luck to be touched by strangers, especially on top of her head! Told him he was lucky she is still young.

While there with my Pit Bull(passively laying on the cold floor on a 100 degree day)a women proceeds to tell her son to not touch THAT dog THAT breed will rip your arm off! To which my 7yro(at the time)replied, "are you serious!, this dog is my best friend and she really looks dangerous passed out on the floor". I was so proud! The woman just smirked and walked away. Also with my Pit Bull I was informed that she will kill my baby and then my odd will be taken away by Social Services, as they should for having that baby killer live with them!
Here is the baby killer the morning before she had to be pts for kidney cancer at the age of 12:

I love when people say " oh wow, pretty dog...does he bite??" First of all, SHE has teeth...what do you think they are used for?? Yes she bites: her toys, her food, her own tail (after chasing it, lol)....Now maybe the better question should be "can I pet her?" "Does she like meeting people", "can I play with her?" Knowledgeable people, always approach and greet me first then when they see her calm demeanor they ask if I will allow her to greet them. THANK YOU people that have a clue :)

I have wanted to pet a dog but you must always ask because, yes some dogs have issues and you can't always assume they will not bite, even though people always assume my pit/bordeaux Will bite them, grrr....

I just try to keep a dark sense of humor about it and keep my straightest face if people are really rude. Sometimes you just can't fix stupid and have to have a little fun with it. I think every breed attracts comments and questions based on misinformation that has been perpetuated out there via the media or movies.

When I had my German Shepherd Dogs it was- Is that a police dog (mostly from kids)? No, they are family dogs.
Do you speak German to them because they are GSD's and they know that language from birth and/or their mother-dog spoke it? Ahhhhh, sure. I actually tried to speak canine but I couldn't roll my grrr's correctly or hit the high howl just right so they gave up teaching me and we stayed with German.
I also had arguements about their coloring and if they were pure since they were both red sables but looked nothing alike. My female was a long coated black/red and my male a standard coat of straight red with no black (like deep Golden Retriever coloring). No, she's not a Belgian-Do you have pure breed papers?-Yes, I have her papers. They are in german. Do ya wanna see them?-Oh, if they are in german then she must be a GSD. ( I feel sorry for those poor GSDs from the Czech Republic or Holland. They must be confused about who they are. :)

One of the 2 dogs I have now is an English Black Labrador (very stocky build and 85 lbs). My favorite conversation (with an adult in Rochester) was: Is he pure?- Yes.- He looks big. I thought Labs have skinny legs and small chests. Are you sure he doesn't have Newfie?- I have his papers. I saw his Mom and Uncle. He looks like his uncle. No, he doesn't have Newfie in him: some Labs get a very thick, dense coat in winter since they were used to retrieve birds in icy waters. He's lived his whole life in NY as a family dog though. First near Buffalo where his breeder lives and now in Rochester.- Oohhh, yeah. If he was born near Buffalo then that is why his coat is extra thick. It's really cold there. (as opposed to single digit tropical Rochester???)

I do have little kids ask me if he bites since he is black and big and gets hyper-wiggly when he sees them. I tell them only if you bite him first. If you promise not to bite him and give him gentle lovies then you can pet him. We don't want to scare him.

My Anatolian mix they just ask me what he is from across the street (It might have something to do with the cold, silent, unwavering stare as they approach, pass by and until they are about 100 feet past us). Very rarely does anyone ask to pet him unless they have a big dog too, but I do get those vicious big dog comments or ones about him attacking/eating their precious fur-darling as it strangles itself barking and lunging at us as the owner drags it by. Dakota knows better then to react but I still give him the "leave it and sit" which he obeys. My usual comments back are " Oh, he only eats little dogs on Wednesdays so you are pretty safe today" or " He only likes the small ones with short coats. The really hairy ones get stuck in his teeth." I also like to use the "Don't worry. I'm not sure my dog recognizes your's as a dog since it is wearing such an interesting outfit."

My favorite is when my son (who was then 2 years old), Dakota and my dog trainer friend were with me at Petsmart checking out . An older lady was behind us and made a comment about it being dangerous to have a mean looking big dog with a young child. Someone might get hurt. I promptly turned around, kept my cool and told her, " You are completely right. I've been socializing him, taking him to playgroups, exposing him to lots of people of different ages but he still has a tendency to bite people when he gets overexcited or wants to start a fight. He's already bit my older daughter several times." To which the lady now had a horrified but I told you so expression. "I think my only option is to find a special muzzle for him when we are home or out. Do they make ones that are approved by child protective services for 2 year old boys? Let's just say, I have never seen anyone get so red in the face in their life. As for my dog trainer friend, she almost peed herself laughing.

We have 4 bullmastiffs, & we always take at least 2 with us whenever we can. Magee is 9 yrs old, blind from glaucoma, & diabetic. She still does therapy work at least once a month, & lives a great life, although she's much slower than she used to be. We frequently take Magee in a little cart, so that we can get around faster, since she walks slow & we're her seeing eyes. After the usual what breed is she/how old is she/aww, you're so sweet to take her out questions & statements, there's always the uncomfortable question about when are we going to put her down. Makes me so angry. She can walk; she's an integral part of the pack; she's healthier than everyone else in many ways...And who are these strangers that think they can pass judgement on our dog?

People can be so insensitive. At 11 years of age, my GSD got gray and a bit rickety when walking, but was otherwise happy and healthy. A man that owned a local business (and also owned a GSD) would ask me every time we walked by, "How old is he now?" and would follow with a "Oh, he doesn't have too long left huh."

I lost him last summer at 13.5.

We usually take at least 2 dogs with us when we go out to public places. Then we do the bullmastiff 2 step: take 2 steps, get stopped by "Oh wow your dogs are awesome! What are they?" "They're bullmastiffs." "Both of them?" (We usually take a fawn and a brindle) "Yes" "Do they eat much? Do they poop a lot?" "No; they don't eat much & yes they poop. And it's big." "Do they drool?" "Only when they lift their heads from the toilet." We try to keep our tongues because it's not only good for the dogs to get out & socialize, it's good for people to see them and how gentle & laid back they are.
Before Sunny got neutered, we got a lot of comments on the size of his testicles. One guy said "Whoa; his balls are bigger than mine!" How could resist the response "Sounds like a personal problem."
The one that makes me really angry is when we take the old diabetic blind girl Magee out. Depending on where we're going we sometimes take her in her wagon. She feels a little safer & we don't have to worry about being her seeing eye dog. The comments like "Wow she's really old" (Yeah; I know) and this is the one I usually walk away from without a response : "When are you gonna put her down?"

The one I've been getting lately is "that's not a full mastiff is it?" or "is that some type of mix?" He's a Bullmastiff. "Oh! So he's a full mastiff?" Yes, Bullmastiff. "Full mastiff?" ... yea. I feel like I'm naming off Santa's reindeer sometimes.
You know English, Cane Corso, Bullmastiff and Bordeaux. Presa, Tibetan, the Neo and Tosa... But do you recall, the most famous mastiff of all? :)

That was a Dogue de Bordeaux. My boy is a Bullmastiff. Similar in looks and shape though.

@AKBull we got that too when we had Ebony. People would pronouce it as two breeds: "Bull-Mastiff" like it was a cross. I'd say "No ... Bullmastiff, one word". Amazing the number of people who didn't believe me and thought I was parading around a Bulldog-Mastiff cross. We also noticed that the single syllable "Bull" automatically makes people pull their kids in closer and give us a wider berth than was strictly necessary.

Yes I know he's a bullmastiff. I live with 4 of them. I'd recognize that squishy face anywhere. But don't you get that question often?

Oh my bad Ruby, I'm a bit dense at times. ;) Still getting over the flu...
Yes. :) "Is that a Turner and Hooch dog?" Yes, yes he is. lol

Marrow. You know, I haven't had any reactions like that with people, yet. It's usually people with kids and they let the kids paw all over him. I mostly attribute this to Junior's demeanor. He is one of the most body happy dog's I've owned. "PEOPLE!!" wag wag wag wag wag. Unless he sees them outside of the house or car, that's a different story. I've experienced what you're talking about though when I had my previous dogs. A fair number of people would cross the road to the other sidewalk when we were walking towards them.

Some of these stories... ahahaa

Thankfully I haven't come across any stupid when out. Most people just go "A whaaat?" when asking about the breed, amazed at the size and wanting to pet her for an hour. Although this one time an older lady stopped in awe of Trinity's beauty :)cool:), gazing at her through the car window... oohing at her colouring and size. She asked how many years, which caught Trinity's attention. I told her six months- "QUOI!!", Trinity let out a friendly bark and the poor lady jolted back and scurried off pretty quick like she was a monster about to eat her. Oh well.

The old tried and true bugs me "so when you gonna put a saddle on that for your kids to ride?" Um, never. I happen to like his hips in good condition and he doesn't need to support my 60+ and 45+ pound children. The in-laws have actual (gasp) horses for them to ride. Or the ever wonderful one, some mom to a two year old--"oooh...can I put my little (Suzy, Johnny) up on him and you walk him around like a pony? No. You met this dog all of two seconds ago and you want to put your child on him? Have you lost all sense? Don't get me wrong, Willie (our EM) would probably stand for any of it since he loves people, but why in the world would I ever allow him to be used like that. Also, how can a parent to a little child be that lacking is safety consciousness. Like I said, Willie is great, but what happens if she tries that mess with a dog who isn't properly socialized or who had a bad life or is just very shy?

People see Raistlin at 10 months, @120 lbs and comment on how big he is... I tell them Mastiff when asked and brag that he has at least 8 more months to reach his full height and that I cant wait!
