The Pied Mastiff

Hello Everyone,A little about myself, I am from Peterborough, Ontario Canada. I have never owned a mastiff but have for many years hoped some day to have that honour. I have a few questions and would love some enlightening. I am looking into the Pied English mastiff, I love the uncommon colouring ofcoarse. Does the variation in coat colouring result in a healthier mastiff? Does the pied coat colouring mean that the kennel clubs do not recognize them?Thank you everyone.

I'm no expert but according to what I could google the Pies mastiff is not recognized by any of the kennel clubs. It's actually seen as a fault. I think they look cool though.

I doubt the coloring improves health. Since it is a recessive trait it may have associated health issues since many breeds have health issues associated to recessive coat colours but that's just a possibility, I don't actually know.

i don't know much about mastiffs but i believe pied mastiffs were accepted in the standard long time ago and health wise they were equally as healthy as the standard mastiff and some even claim they have better hips. but i do know that some studies linked coat color with character and temperament but i also think this is far fetched. in any case i find the lied mastiff interesting and beautiful.

!870 or 1875 it was written out of the standard, no known reason as to why past the color fell out of favor. There are no known health issue associated with it and no know benefits. Many are fighting to have it put back into the standard. And no there is no organization at the time that allows the color.

Sinced Pied is recessive, breeding for it can also breed other undesired recessive traits into the dog.

If you want a healthy, long-lived companion, I suggest looking into someone who health tests and breeds for colors that are in the standard.

there are some decent breeders who specialize in pied mastiffs , if you are not going to show the dog then its a wonderful handsome dog...no health issues or anything different from the standard mastiff .. and the pied color is a natural mastiff color and as TWW clarified (THX TWW) it was written out of the standard in 1870 or 75...but i looked into it and dna testing proves that its a pure EM and many are asking to reintroduce the pied mastiff into the standard.

Thank you everyone for your information provided. I have been looking into the standards more thoroughly. I have contacted "Joseph Mastiffs" and they were very helpful in providing me with health certificates and DNA testing on both of their sire and dam whom are expected to have a litter this year or early 2017. Again thank you everyone.
