Torn ACL - need advice

I have a 7 year old female (Gracie). Just found out today she tore her ACL in her hind leg. I have done a TON of research online today and all I have seen is that the traditional surgery doesn't last long in large breeds. She already has severe arthritis in her front shoulders. So before this mishap, she had a hard time getting around. I am at a loss as if I do the surgery or not. She weighs 210! So that is a factor also. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

I wish I knew what to tell you ... the only experience I have with torn ACLs is with humans and horses, neither one of which would be a good gauge for a mastiff. All I can say is to make sure you've got the dog's best interests at heart.

I've had a lot of dogs with this problem at the shelter (none that weighed 210lbs though) and from what I've learned the surgery should work if she recovers properly (ie. can't overdue it but she does need to put weight on it asap) and the surgeon knows what they're doing we've had the surgery done on many dogs and it's always worked but we've always been diligent with the recovery too. one thing i can tell you is that if you don't do it not only is it painful but the knee will heal very thickened and she will have arthritis in that knee, probably much sooner than she would otherwise and it's not uncommon for the other knee to go afterwards in either case from compensating for the bad knee...but not always. I would discuss all options with your vet and ask what the outcome will be if you choose not to do it. she is an older dog but she's not ancient either, probably should consider what the rest of her health is like as well.
