tummy troubles...

Hi! Our family has our fist dog, and she is an EM named Sadie. We are really excited to have her! The posts here have been so helpful over the past few weeks.

Sadie is having some problems with diarrhea lately. She is 18 weeks old, and about a week ago she had really watery diarrhea (at night, all over the crate :( ) - we did boiled chicken and rice with some yoghurt for two days, and had a stool sample checked, nothing found. She had no movements for those couple of days (I guess the pipes were refilling...), and since then she has alternated between very solid movements and mixes of semi-solid/watery. Since we got her 6 weeks ago we have been feeding her diamond large breed puppy (lamb/rice). I tried to re-introduce that, but if anything she seemed worse. She is back on mainly chicken/rice/yoghurt...

I thought maybe she is having a problem with the lamb, so I picked-up some of the diamond large breed 60+ (since it is chicken-based & seems better for her from reading some posts on the subject), and I plan to try transitioning her to it from the boiled chicken/rice, but her tummy issue isn't really resolving.

Two days before the diarrhea initially hit, we took her to the park, and she did a lot of running on her own (we didn't make her run). Then the day before, we had some friends over and all the kids were running around with her - then BAM! I wonder if we are not letting her sleep enough, or if we are exercising/stressing her too much.

I also noticed that her nose and eyes are a bit runny lately and she is moving in slow motion...

We are planning to try and limit her activity and any excitement for a few days, and introduce the regular food, but I am not confident it will resolve it.

Any suggestions on what we should do for Sadie?

Thanks,
Erik

Mix in some real plain pumpkin into her dinner. Yogurt should be helping to settle her stomach.

Hmmmm.... a visit to a park followed by diarrhea (uncontrollable?), low energy and runny eyes and nose? I might be talking to a vet about that one. I'd be keeping her inside, calm and warm and making sure she gets lots of fluids, just in case. You don't want her getting dehydrated.

How long has this been going on now?

If you try plain pumpkin, just try a little bit - like 1 tablespoon per meal to start with.

Your idea of "over-doing it" might be all it is, too.
My sister's dog suffers from stress-induced diarrhea (high strung border collie/heeler mix)... meeting Denna as a puppy gave her the runs when the met for the first time a few Christmases ago. Oops. Just adding plain rice to her kibble helped get her solid again. That, and not letting the big clumsy EM puppy trample her anymore. :\

We used a product called "GI Support" from onlynaturalpet.com when Denna had loose poop issues (more due to food transitions, though), it seemed to help us.

Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks for the replies!

I hope she isn't allergic to chicken since I have 40lbs of it...

This has been going on for 1 week now and she has a checkup at the vet tomorrow.

I will try to get her back on kibble, keep the rice going, add pumpkin, and keep activity to a minimum... Not sure what else to do.

Thanks,
Erik

I'm sorry to hear about Sadie but unfortunately, most mastiffs are allergic to chicken and grains in kibble. They seem to be ok with boiled white rice but that could also be an allergen to her.

Diarrhea is a sign of too rich of a food, chicken/grains in the food or she's gotten into something outside.

As Tina stated, keep her hydrated. Is she drinking normally, peeing normally and playing normally?

Add pumpkin (not the pie filling) to her food (boiled chicken and rice) and I would recommend adding a probiotic (I give Titan the same one I take).

Keep us posted on Miss Sadie.

Welcome! I also have an EM named Sadie:eek: She is allergic to chicken and grains and that includes rice. I have been struggling with Sadie's tummy for almost two years. You can also try cooked ground turkey and pumpkin. That is the only thing that my Sadie will accept. I would also try to find another food. I have been on a two year food hunt and I have had good luck with Taste of The Wild. They have two puppy formulas that are good for growing mastiff pups and they are actually all life stages foods, so you can feed it through adult hood is she does well on it. I have my Sadie on the Roasted venison and bison right now. Hope she gets better soon. Like others have said, make sure she drinks a lot of water since they can get dehydrated very fast.

We had some tummy issues early on with our now 14 month old Maggie. Her stools were pretty loose and she was have BM's 4, 5 and 6 times a day. Went through a couple of different foods before settling on a brand suggested by someone at Petco. She's been on the Natures Balance Limited Ingredient Diet for 7 months or so and I am quite happy with it. No more gooey stools and she only has to "go" a couple of times a day now. We settled on the Sweet Potato formula which is of course the most expensive but she seems to like it.
