Vet visit today...

I know he is not a mastiff but.... I took my Boxer into the vet today. I have been noticing that he is not completely bearing weight on his back left leg. He also very slightly drags this leg when walking. Since he has hemangiosarcoma and is probably about 13 years old, this is not a huge surprise. I have monitored it for a little while and made the decision to take him into the vet. She ran xrays and it turns out he has some pretty severe arthritis in his back 2 legs. One leg is just worse than the other. This too is not completely surprising. I was actually fearing that it was a small tumor on his spine or something. She did say that on his spine his vertebra have started producing more bone which might could cause some pain and affect the nerves. I was aware that this could happen. Guess you learn something new every day. At any rate, she wants to give him 2 shots a week for the next 3 weeks to help with the pain etc. We will see how it goes. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Crosby is my white shadow and I have been preparing myself for the worst since we got the diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma about 4 years or so ago. I have been completely blessed to have him with me for so long, now. He still gets around pretty well and I hope this treatment will help him continue to beat the odds, but the worry is still there.

I also had the vet look at two spots under his jaw area. I found them the other day and they felt like 2 small (about the size and shape of those kids bouncy ball toys). Turns out he has this growth on one of his inner cheeks that I had not noticed. I occassionally look at his teeth (which aren't great but due to his age, etc. we have not wanted to put him under anesthesia for a scaling - boxers have notoriously bad teeth in old age), but I had not flipped his cheek up and noticed this growth. He was last in at the vet in april and she checked his teeth then and there was no growth. She gave me some antibiotic to use with him for a week and said if it did not significantly reduce in size, we would have to remove it. Please keep us in your thoughts and I will keep you posted.

Sounds like a trouper to me :) My good friends have an older Lab that sometimes gets randomly places fatty lumps. They look worse than they are and they don't appear to cause him pain. Maybe that's what the mouth lumps were (hope it's not an abcess!).

There're lots of old geezers (human and dog) out there that still live it up so if Crosby's living a full life then I'm sure he'll be around for a while.

Wow, a 13 year old Boxer! That is it's self is awesome! We need some pictures of him as well!
Our boy (Boxer) is 7 and you can see old age creeping up on him, although he doesn't know it yet :p
He gets fat deposits here and there on his body, they are like little balls that form under his skin, it is common in the breed. They grow and then disappear, our vet said nothing to worry about, they don't cause pain. And I agree, Boxers don't do great when being put under at the best of times. Is best if it could be dealt with without surgery.
Good luck and keep us UTD!

Thanks guys! The encouragement is appreciated and helps. I am going to try to post a couple of pics of him for you. These are some pictures from several years ago. Easiest ones to upload on the computer right now. We just took some other pics of him the other day with the digital camera. These were taken in about 2006 so this was when he was about 9. I will try to upload the most recent pics of him tomorrow or Thursday. He has lost some weight since these. I just had to throw in the 3rd pic. It's my favorite. He has such a crooked nose, but I love it :) More recent pics to follow soon.... Thanks again! Cody and Marrow, I hear you about the lumps and bumps. It's one thing I hate is so rampant in the Boxer breed. Cancer is awful for dogs and humans!!! Crosby2.jpgCrosby laying.jpgIMGA0026.jpg

LOL @ the crooked nose, makes him look a little grumpy. Not sure I've ever seen a white Boxer before. He's clearly not an albino, but I guess I didn't know they could be that color. Learned something new today! He's a looker either way, I can why you're so attached.

@ Marrow, the white boxer is quite common. Boxer's with 1/3 of their coat being white are considered white, but 20% of all Boxers born fit into that category.
It is a DQ in the show ring, but every breeder has them and they are sold as pets :)
We have a few around here.
He is a handsome guy, I have a soft spot for Boxers. He looks GREAT for 9!!

Ha! I know the crooked nose is great :) I have a friend that would always LOVE to keep Crosby for me when I went out of town. She has a golden retreiver, Chance. She seriously loves Crosby but loves to mess with me about his let's say -not so Golden- looks. Each time I would call to check and see how he was doing, she would tell me 1 of 2 things:
1) Guess What??? We had a BEAUTIFUL dog contest and guess who won? Chance-a-roo!!!
OR
2) Guess What??? We had an UGLY dog contest tonight and guess who won??? Crosby!!

I don't care! I think he is the most handsome dog ever! Oh and the color white in Boxers, just like Cody said, is not really rare at all. Lots of people think it is and some bad breeders will try to make extra money advertising them as "rare". They aren't. They might have been slightly more rare in the past, as I have heard some (irreputable) breeders used to have them put down immediately following birth because they can't be "shown". I think that was years and years ago, though. They are still 100% Boxer and they make wonderful pets. Just can't be shown.

Anyway, I will be trying to post updated pics soon!
