  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

We're in heat...I think.

Our baby girl is acting odd. I thought it was just my low grade cold, but this morning her breath smelled and there on the comforter were two blood stains, one dry, the other fresh.

Oh, boy! My poor baby.

Helpful suggestions? What to expect....especially if you don't want to be Expecting!?

I took my own advice and read through the old threads. I found information regarding the behaviour I can expect to see. My dog seems to be suffering - hormones! I thank everyone at the Forum for all the help I've received. Especially those members that responded to my pm's.

May I suggest that a specific, permanent, sub-category for Heat info be established - 50% of members will experience at least one heat with their animals. A dedicated link would help those members negotiate the pitfalls of this time. There's never enough info to soothe your worries....When your baby is hurting and confused, there us never enough info.

Oh boy have fun with that!! My Dixie just bled for 24 days straight, stopped 2 days ago THANK GOD! I thought it was never gonna end.. Just today finally my 13 month male BM will stop trying to mount her and stick his nose all up in it. It was horrible. And if you have an intact male, KEEP THEM SEPARATED! ! Like in separate rooms...

Never again will I own a female..

Vet tried to scare us that it would be a blood bath, all over the walls, floors, etc,. Breeder told us it could be messy and they advocated the diaper route. So far we've decided to help her clean up by dabbing area frequently, wiping up floors as we find spots. We went to a second hand store and bought black sheets and blankets to cover our furniture and bed. The worst so far, and I can see this resulting in scrubbing walls down/or painting, is the welcome at the front door. That tail whipping back and forth just spreads it around.

Black Shadow Cane Corso told me that using a pair of men's underwear backwards and lined with feminine pads would be helpful. If the blood flow gets worse, we will try that.

We are going to continue the morning walk at 6:30 am. It's still dark and the only dog we encounter out then is her boyfriend Doc. Doc will be interested, but we will keep them apart. Neither dog parent really wants the stress of 12 - 15 puppies. Oh, they'd be cute, but reality bites. It's cruel that nature makes this possible before they are full grown.

The signs we saw before this became obvious was an increased neediness. She was always cling-on velcro dog, but then it became so desperate. We always had a love in in the bed before the lights went out, but now she wouldn't go to her own bed, and if she did, she'd sneak back and be sent away over and over again.

She took chewing/gnawing up to new heights: it's frenetic. Stuff that should be indestructible has been ripped to shreds.
Desperate eye contact, asking, asking, asking for...something! Sighing, sighing, sighing. Pacing aimlessly, almost like she's looking for something, then back to looking deep in my eyes and sighing some more. Sunday night was really bad, but we didn't see any blood until Friday, but there was evidence that it had been going on for at least a day before. We're somewhere in our first week.

So, three weeks of this? Hells Bells, this is going to be long.

She'll be nine months on the 22nd of January. It's a long way to 18 months and getting her spayed. I also read it's a good time to have a stomach tack done to avoid bloat.

Is it true that she'll have this every six months?

LOL sorry I can't help you with that. It is what they say, but I don't know if it is true! I am just asking because I am trying to figure out if my EM is starting to go into heat or whether she has just because super needy in the last little bit. She is licking herself a lot right now but I have not seen any blood. I keep waiting for it but I know EMs are suppose to take longer. I would be happy if she only had one before she was spade!

Doggie diaper and regular maxi pads will be your best friend. Its a pain to keep changing all the time but it will keep the blood off your stuff. We never found a drop of it inside the house. 2013-12-29_16-47-53_633.jpg

I really am not looking forward to it and if it does happen I hope it is in the summer! Izzy goes in and out all the time and I will have to be with her and don't want to stand out in 3 feet of snow and -15 weather! Do you have to crate your girl when you leave?

We stopped crating Bailey at 4 or5 months. She has the run of the house, though we close off rooms. Right now we are taking turns spending time with her. We don't want to leave her alone too long.

And, yes, they start licking excessively before it happens.

I have to crate Izzy when I am not home because I don't trust her alone yet. She is a huge chewer and her favourite thing to chew is wood (and guess what my floors are!). So I will probably have to let her be without anything on in her crate while I am gone. Did you find Bailey was sleeping a lot and not eating a lot? I am thinking she is either coming into heat or taking another growth spurt.

Sleeping in excess of eight hours, though repositioning herself during the night and licking. She's been going downstairs to drink in night. Her water bowl is empty in morning, but she's leaving her food all day (very weird) and eating her breakfast around two or three. Evening meal is better.

Well I guess I will have to wait and see lol. She only comes out of bed to be pet and then goes back in and sleeps for another hour or so. This is about the 4th day where she hasn't really touched her food and then all of a sudden eats a whole bowl but not as much as she normally eats. I really hope it is a growth spurt!

Bailey ate all through her growth spurts, it's only the last week that she'd leave her food and not eat it till the afternoon, then by 2 pm she'd wolf it down. She had a bad very needy Sunday night, she didn't eat her breakfast, her nose was dripping clear fluid and I thought she had a cold and that's why she was sleeping and off her food.

She kept moping at the window...even after she'd just come in from a walk.

If your situation hasn't changed in a couple of days, take your baby to the vet. But first, dab the area with a white kleenex several times a day over the next few days. Check Izzy after she's gotten up from resting as it seems to pool after lying down. I can honestly say I was confused by her array of symptoms and I was on the edge of taking her to the vet. I'm relieved it is a normal process, but anxious about the-day-to-day handling of the situation. I too had heard that EM's have their first heat after a year, and maybe as late as 1 1/2 years.

Perhaps some one with EM's will weigh in and remove the mystery.

As for my CC Bailey, 8 - 12 months is the target, and she's almost 9 months now. I'd hazard a guess that, as with human females, body fat matters. Bailey isn't as lean as the vet would like her....oh, she's far from fat, but, following the human model, higher body fat coincides with early menses.

Thanks! I am pretty sure she isn't sick or anything. She usually goes a little bit without eating much right before a growth spurt and then eats as much as she can get her mouth on when the actual spurt hits plus she sleeps a lot! Hoping thats all it is and the weather has been awful where I am so she hasn't been out much so maybe she is just bored. Can't wait for spring LOL as I am sure you feel the same in London!

Today our little lady didn't mooch at the breakfast table, that's four days of disinterest. She ate her breakfast though, which means she's feeling a little more comfortable. The blood spotting has increased, and her chewing, which had gone turbo had really increased since yesterday. Part of this might be the new chew toy. A Yuppy Puppy Marrow Wishbone. It has taken a beating, but it is soothing her.

She's been sleeping with me the last few nights (Daddy wisely decided to sleep elsewhere and avoid the female drama.). It's a fitful sleep, she's up and down repositioning herself and licking, and still desperate to be touching me. Poor angel.
