what to do?

Lucy is our 7 month old DDB. I'm getting concerned about a couple things that keep recurring with her and was hoping for some insight.

First let me say, we've been to the vet. I'm not really excited about this vet. He seems pretty blasé about everything we take Lucy in for. First it was spotty hair loss.. wasn't mites. We determined by ourselves that it was the local "premium brand" dog food we were giving her. Switched to Royal Canin and she's got her hair back.

On one visit almost 2 months ago, our vet noticed a few dark dots on Lucy's belly. He said this was normal. They looked like raised Sharpie dots. So we let those come and go, but now she seems to have more of these pimples, and they aren't black anymore. They are all over her belly. It's not bothering her in the least. No itching. They can be as small as a pen tip or sometimes larger like pencil eraser size. They are simply red. Nothing ever seems to come from them like you would expect from a pimple. I wash her bedding with gentle detergent. We are leaving for a trip next week. Should I take her in again? Has anyone else had trouble with this?

The next issue we've been dealing with for a while now. I noticed several months back that occasionally one of Lucy's pupils would get smaller than the other. Took her to vet, could never get a decent picture of what I was seeing with her and he just couldn't understand what I was explaining (UGH, Language barrier!). So we did a round of eye salve... then a stronger eye salve when her third eyelid would start covering the small pupiled eye. We ran the 7 days of eye salve, and now at least once every week, she is still getting the small pupil/third eyelid visible. We use the salve when this happens. Any thoughts? It has been primarily one eye, but on one occasion it did move to the other eye.

I was prompted to write this tonight because we went for a long walk and were standing in the kitchen and after a little more than a week with healthy looking eyes, one eye started getting the tiny pupil again. Am I looking at allergies?? Something worse? We are genuinely concerned for her. It doesn't seem to itch or anything but she just looks miserable.

I apologize for the rambling. It seems all put together in my head and then I sit down to type and it feels scattered. Here's the best picture I have of the eye issue.

Thanks in advance!

For starters, look for another vet..Not to spook you but I had a great dane that was having issues like you described with her eyes and it was a neurological problem,of course she was 8 years old. I also had to go with a grain free dog food with an alternate carb source like potatoes and her hair and skin went back to normal,I also put apple cider vinegar in their water.. Good luck

I second the second vet opinion... hopefully you have some options.
Maybe you can find one without a language barrier?
Maybe check with some local breeders or rescue groups with large/giant breed experience and see if they can recommend someone.

I've never seen that kind of eye thing. I'd be a little freaked out, myself.
Can't help with the belly dots either, sorry. :(

I'm sorry you and Lucy are going through this :( a second opinion is always a good place to start...

My boy Jax who is 6 mos old has the same red pimples he just got them the other week. Fortunately for us we have an excellent vet who put him on antibiotics and it is going away .She did say it probably was due to the heat and allergies. It doesn't seem to bother him at all no scratching or itching. Our last dogue Riley had the same thing . It looks like a summer time thing to me. I wouldn't worry about it to much. Apple cider vinegar with mother in it works really good for their skin.We put it on after a bath and let it dry on its own. When it comes to Lucy's eyes i would recommend a second opinion from another vet . Good luck i'm sure she will be fine

Sorry to hear about Lucy. I agree, new vet! The dilated pupil is not a good sign, hate to say that but it's neurological like Kim said.

Do the black marks smell or are they kind smushy material? If they are, then it's a yeast infection caused by diet. Red bumps are usually signs of bug bites, flea bites and/or allergic reaction to environmental stimuli.

I hate when vets automatically prescribe antibiotics for bumps. :(

Please keep us posted on Lucy.

Thanks for the responses. I really do appreciate everyone's insight.

I, too, have worried it was something neurological. Do you know how they test for something like that? I hope it's nothing like that, but we're going to play it safe and get a second opinion. These are the times I wish for my regular vet back home.

The black marks were slightly raised and I can't remember if I ever felt any of them to be honest. I didn't even notice them until one vet visit the doc remarked "oh and those black spots are normal..." normal?? Luckily those have mostly disappeared, which MAY be linked to the change in dog food that was prompted by the hair loss... just a thought.
The red spots are still all over.. She gives us a tummy show every day during lunch and they are still there. I am leaning towards it being more of an allergic reaction or irritation, because she's flea free, mite free, and that I am sure of. Either way, I plan on raising this topic with the new vet too.

I'm definitely going to try the ACV. I drink it in the morning so we're going to experiment and see how it works for her.

Be sure to research amount of ACV to give Lucy. Too much can cause diarrhea.

Please keep us posted on Miss Lucy.

ACV will take awhile to get into her system about a month I would say but its did help my girl, she quit scratching and shedding so much and her fur feels softer. I have a 2 1/2 gallon bucket and put a half cup in it,they don't seem to notice,I started with 1/4 cup and then added after a week.

Good to know. I certainly don't want to cause her any trouble with diarrhea!

I didn't know it could help with the shedding issues too! That would definitely be an added perk!

Thank you for the link, KimT.

So sorry for my extended absence! We went on vacation to the States the past few weeks and I didn't think to log on here until now! So sorry!

Lucy is doing well. The spots on her belly were almost completely gone after we picked her up from her "vacation" at the dog hotel. According to the keeper, there were no issues with that or the eye problem I had been worried about. That was a relief, but we still have an appointment for this coming week with a new vet. I was hoping to be able to report that there has been no eye issues at all, but on Tuesday night at training, she started getting the strange look in the right eye again. Grrr.

So yeah, update is that we have a new vet appt next week and hope to get to the bottom of this eye thing. Otherwise, she's been like a magnet since we have been home from vacation...I wish we could take her along with us when we go, but that is a topic for a new thread.

Will keep everyone posted on what the new vet says!

I have to agree that you should get a second opinion. See if your vet can refer you to a neurologist. We just took Jax 2 weeks ago and they were amazing. Our vet didn't have a clue what was wrong with him but the new one nailed it pretty quickly. He didn't have the bumps that Lucy has but he did have the dilated pupil, among a long list of other things! He was diagnosed with masticatory muscle myositis. He started treatment and is doing very well now. I hope the new vet is able to find a solution! Sending good thoughts for Lucy! Keep us posted on what they find.

I can't say how happy I am that we switched vets! What a breath of fresh air to have someone who is generally concerned for Lucy.

That being said, here's what we are faced with now:

Eye issue: New vet got to experience just how much Lucy *LOVVESSS* having her eyes or ears looked at. She couldn't get a good steady look but did manage to see some follicles in the eye which she says makes her think that Lucy has allergies. She is going to send the pic I posted here to a colleague that's more specialized in that and get his opinion. But at least that's moving forward. (We have only had the eye thing happen once in the past 2 weeks and that was while at training).

Belly bumps: New vet thinks this is a bacterial infection. Lucy has been getting bumps on her belly for a long time and just recently she's getting inflammations on her back. New vet took a sample and started us on antibiotics with the possibility of switching to a different antibiotic once the exact cause is found. SOOOOO happy she didn't just poo-poo this with us.

What we thought would be a 20 minute appointment ended up being almost an hour long work out for the three of us (me, husband, and vet)... Lucy HATES having ears and eyes messed with. So much that she started getting snappy. Unfortunately for us, we are also now on a regiment of once a day ear meds for what seems to be a never ending infection. Poor pup kept holding one ear lower than normal this weekend and after a struggle I was able to clean it again and get as much ointment in as I could.. It's literally a wrestling match....with teeth involved. I've said that maybe I need to wear one of those puffy protection suits to administer drops. I have to imagine it just hurts and she puts herself into a corner when she knows it's time for meds. Does anyone have any tricks to help with this? We've tried treats and we use a muzzle sometimes. But she is still thrashing and acting like a crazy dog, but once meds are done, she's back to her normal self...

Ah and the last note of business at the vet... she's 9 months and 90 pounds.

Glad you like the new vet! This may have been covered, but what kind of food are you feeding Lucy? Generally, mastiffs are allergic to chicken and grain and those 2 ingredients can cause severe skin allergies and ear infections. Titan had severe skin allergies and chronic ear infections. Vet kept prescribing cephalexin, steroid and ear drops. The meds worked but conditions returned 2-3 weeks later. I started Titan on raw diet in March 2012 and his skin has improved 99%.

You might want to feed Lucy a chicken and grain free kibble, if you aren't already doing so.

If this has been covered, sorry for covering it again.

When she was a puppy we were feeding her the premium local brand...bald patches started popping up all over her legs and above her eye. So we determined it was most likely the food and switched her to Royal Canin Giant Junior..bald spots healed....pup was doing fine. Old vet suggested we switch her to adult food. We Stayed on one more bag of Junior and she stayed on. It for thetime we were on vacation. Upon returning home, we chose to go ahead with the move to RC adult.

I just went and looked at the bag we have in the cupboard and the first ingredient is dehydrated poultry protein....then corn type ingredients...

Before we decided getting a dog at all we had discussed what we would do foodwise. I did some research on the raw diet. It all seemed great! The only thing that turned me off to it was after the meal, there's the raw meat slobber... (This is how I see it in my mind at least)
And then the "i need a kiss right after eating" stuff. I would be following her with Mr. Clean and a roll of paper towels!! I am guessing I am over reacting. How do people deal with the raw factor? i know how I clean up my counter and my own hands when messing with raw meat.
Thoughts??
