Why are we going backwards 8n training

Seems to me like Linc is forgetting his training. He is acting like a rebellious teenager.
Not listening good at all anymore.
The only thing that has changed is he no longer is crated at night due to the fact that he sleeps all night beside my bed.
He just passed the 6 mos mark.
Thinking maybe calling in a trainer

Strict Nothing In Life is Free (NILF), in order to get anything he has to do something you want. To get food he has to sit and wait. To get attention(petts, scratches, etc) he has to sit and be polite, or lie down, or....he wants to play he has to behave how you want. That doesn't mean you ignore training, take half his breakfast, and save it for training rewards through out the day. If he gets a lunch ditto. If you can't train then stuff kongs instead so he has to work at it to get his food. That sort of thing.

I agree, strict NILF. It's earlier than most be he could be in his teenage phase. NILF was a godsend when Kryten was in that phase. With Kryten it was as if he went to sleep one night a well behaved puppy and woke up a hellion. We made progress using NILF over the next few months and then one morning he woke up my sweet well behaved puppy again.

We're 6 month old hell child buddies! I posted a thread not too long ago called 25 Weeks and Feeling the Burn! - Mastiff Forum! . It has been a trying time, although really :)knock on wood:) he seems to have already had a bit of a leap in maturity since his behavior problems spiked just a week ago. Maybe I'm just easily enthused these days by progress!

I just truly could not believe the sudden change.
All of a sudden he no longer sits. He completely ignores my sit commands or has forgotten when he he is suppose to sit like when its food time. A huge increase to zoomies, I have felt my voice raising with him like Im scolding a teenager for drinking (not that Ive done that but Im sure that how it would feel lol)
Our walks...forget about it....complete oblivion.......we worked so hard to get to a happy walking. Now its just a struggle. If I walk in anymore circles I am gonna fall over. If I stand in one spot waiting for h8m to sit and place his attention on me.....I am going to be old and grey.
He is still a good boy just as we all know he isnt going to get smaller, and well I just got to be able to socialize him.

He could be feeding off of your energy. Maybe check that. If you are anxious/fearful of him misbehaving or not totally comfortable in your role as a leader that will feed your dog with anxiousness and confusion. I agree with the NILF aspect. But also take a look at your energy. If your dog isn't viewing you as a leader then they will try to take that role on themselves. Love and respect don't go hand in hand.

Not sure of your breed, but in the EM world, that stage at 8 months is completely normal. All six of my boys went through it acting like unschooled maniacs for several months but did eventually get back to the wonderful dogs we were hoping for. Just work your way through it!

Lincol is EM and 6 mos old.
Yesterday we had an absolutely amazing walk. He was so good I was even able to get some sit, wait, come training in with the walk.
Then the last 5 mins he went into badness.
He actually had a full out zoomie on lead. I bet people watching were laughing their assess off cause I should would have if I seen the mess of crazy dog, messed up owner lol
In the house he just does not care to listen anymore. He will now leave the kitchen when I stand with his food waiting for him to sit and make eye contact.....what!

Then he doesn't get food. Try again in an hour, if he's still a jerk then feed him his supper as his breakfast the next morning. One skipped meal isn't going to hurt him.

Oh man. We really are hellchild buddies. I know all about end-of-walk zoomies, which absolutely do make you feel ridiculous.

I find when Hamlet does this, I have pushed his focus too hard. It's like he's blowing off steam, like a kid who just sat through a theatre performance or a long adult dinner and becomes unmanageable. Something that helps me is letting him get as much free romping out of the way about 20 minutes before we walk. To get him to stop this behavior, I typically have to do some basic commands and treat him for his focus before we move on. On the new prong, he pretty much stopped immediately and only objected a bit to moving on with the end of our walk by attempting some leash biting, but I rewarded him with some fun play stuff when we got home.

Also, I think Deb is the one who recommends this--I like using the "find it" game when he does this. He gets to chase after the treats I drop, and it also gains his attention. It's a highly rewarding game to chase after dropped treats, and it focuses that zoomy energy as well.

Linc is HUGE food motivated. ......but now he actually will turn his head if I try and give him a treat that's not suited for his mood lmao
Just last week he didn't care as long as it was a treat, now its a guessing game. If I didn't know better I would think he was a girl trapped in a boy body. Ahahaha

But last week, i see glimmer of a brain ticking, as he throws out behaviours on cue for certain things once more. Nearly there. Must not PTS, must not PTS, must not PTS tempting at times agggh! teens are gross, whatever the species

We regularly tell our dogs that they are going back to the "puppy store" if they don't shape up. Doesn't really bother them, either. I think another dog must've told them the "puppy store" doesn't actually exist. ;)

A regular threat when Kryten was being a brat was that "I should have gotten the Pomeranian".

Just an update on our walks

Linc is doing amazing again. I took a look at my feelings and body language the last week and noticed that I was holding my left hand (he walks on my left) tight to my waist. Even though I felt relaxed my arm wasn't
I now make mental note to relax my arm and hold the lead just so I have a feather like grasp till I am totally at ease then hold it in my hand.

Well again we are still having amazing walks. Tonight I took Linc to our local school yard after about 20 mins of structured walking and allowed him to walk freely. I was surprised to find that I actually had to keep moving him away from me. The grass was on my right side so he wouldn't walk on the grass unless I went on the grass to because he walks on my left. I was so happy. Once he realized I was giving him the freedom he started to wonder but the leash stayed loose except one time. After the park he went right back into structured walking. I could have let the leash deag behind him. His head didn't pass my side at all
So proud!
