I have 2 years with DE as well I buy mine from here http://diatomaceousearth.net/ . My first reason to get it was we got hit with a flea infestation, rodent fleas the worst kind. My dogs were unaffected but I was being eaten alive. Since I had dogs I looked for a safe way to kill the parasites off and found DE. In 1 week the fleas were gone. Now I take it internally as do my dogs and I dust the garden and under the beds and furniture with it once a month. Maybe it's why my dogs smell good or maybe it's from the raw but for how inexpensive this product is I am not going to stop anytime soon. BTW if you dust a large area put the dogs out and wear a dust mask, it can cause a cruddy dry cough if you inhale too much.

Just a quick thanks for all the comments and advice.
I cut the size of portions right back for a while as suggested - and he is now back to 4 meals a day.
I still add a little biscuit - but only a very little.
He is growing really well - and I think that the "little and often" approach has evened out his energy bursts a bit
The next steps are to try the "diatomecious earth" - and to find a local butcher for bones etc (he is currently on best steak mince and that cannot go on forever).
