Hi I am new to this site today. I was searching online for any help I could find and stumbled on this site.
Lupin has been in hospital for 6 days today. He is not getting better. He is still vomiting and has diarreha. I asked my vet about giving him goats milk to coat the intestines and stomach and he said old wives tale. He would throw it up as well.
Any ideas. He has gotton plasma from a dog that had high immunities to parvo and it has done nothing. He is so sick. We have only had him for 13 days and 6 have been in hospital. He is getting all supportive care but cant or wont eat. throws up even water, which yesterday was the 1st time he drank any on his own.
His previous owner gave me records of him getting all his shots and dewormings. He does not have any parasites. Vet thinks he did not really get the shots. She told me she gave them herself.
He is wonderful puppy a product of divorce when the women and her 3 kids had to move to an apartment and she couldnt keep him. You can tell she worked with him as he is very polite! Such a sweet baby. Can anyone give me any ideas to run past the vet.
Thanks in advance. Oh my name is Lisa

I am so sorry about your pup. Hope things turn around for it.

I talked to the vet about giving Percy his shots, and the very told me that there is no guarantee that the serum one can get from a store has been stored properly, and she advised me against it.
The previous owner very weep could have given shots, but if it was bad, our done incorrectly, it wouldn't be as effective.

Hi Lisa,

I'm sorry about your little guy. The key is hydration and it sounds like the vet is doing that. I wish I could tell you something to give you more hope, but I haven't heard of any. He can pull through this but it is a hard battle and will take weeks to get him all the way back to good health.

As far as the shots go yes they can be mishandled at home or at a vet clinic. The sad truth is the shot is not 100% effective, even if handled and given properly.

Wishing you and your pup all the best.

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you had to come here on a bad note but this place is an awesome source of information & support. My parents own a rescue dog (lab/chow mix) that also had parvo as a puppy. Like you, they only had her for a week at the most & she ended up having to be hospitalized. She was in the vet's care for 10 days. She was a very, very sick pup. Day 2 of her hospitalization was better, but that night she took a nose dive & was probably very close to death. She stayed very sick for 2 days. They added hetastarch to her fluids & also gave her a transfusion. It was horrible watching her lay lifeless in that cage, hooked up to a catheter that was nearly twice her size. She was also infested with roundworms & was dewormed twice throughout her 10 day stay. She only weighed 3 lbs. The most important advice I can give you I can give you is probably the hardest. I say that because I could barely do it. I had to be patient. I knew she was receiving the best care possible. They did not try to feed her until like day 8 I think. My suggestion is have the vet do a fecal test if he hasn't already done so just to make sure he has no parasites. With my parents dog, we were sworn by the rescue she came from that she was vaccinated & dewormed. The roundworms made her more anemic right alongside the parvo. Ask your vet about adding hetastarch to his fluids. It will end up looking like they are pumping yellow Gatorade through him. That's the only way I can describe it. When Bailey got her transfusion, they added the hetastarch that same day. And give him time. They usually get more sick before they get better so maybe this is just his downward slide before he starts getting better. I know it's difficult to watch your baby suffer & you just feel hopeless. But you're doing the right thing by having him in the hospital with the care he needs. I just hate hearing stories like this bc I've been there. And it's extremely painful to watch. I'll keep your baby in my prayers. The power of prayer really helped Bailey.

Just to give you hope here's pics of Bailey.
