Hi, my name is Millie and I have an 11 month old male french mastiff named Ace. I was wondering if anybody out there familiar with Mastiffs could help me with a new problem Im having with Ace. As soon as anyone enters the room he is constantly jumping at us and playfully biting. Ace is about 115lbs and this hurts. Any ideas? Has anyone dealt with this Im really concerned..... Thank you:eek:

I have a 2 year old french mastiff. Our mastiff does the same thing with jumping and he will put his mouth around peoples arms and playfully bite. Training is what will stop that. When someone comes in the house I now will grab onto our mastiffs collar and hold him down to stop him from jumping, he gets very excited.

Great post. Love French mastiffs, you two look great together.

Welcome....I would suggest turning your back on your dog and do not give him any attention when he behaves like this....if that is not working you might need to give him a knee to the chest and tell him no...

Welcome, I agree turn your back and give him no attention until he is calm and sitting. moose doesnt like strangers let alone being petted by one so I got out of having to train him no to jump lol.

My 2 year old French Mastiff, Vegas does the same exact thing, she wasnt around alot of people besides us as a puppy, and im wondering if thats the case, an when she sees other people she gets excited and wants the attention..Our male puppy will be turning 8 weeks an ready for us to get in mid Jan, an we are wondering what we can do different to fix this, since he is planned to be a lot bigger then her when he's older.

Mine does not like strangers either and wont let anyone pet him. He will only try to jump up on family and people he knows. When I walk him no one is able to come up to him.

Welcome to the forum!
Training and being consistent. Our CC pup thinks she is part Kangaroo, part Crocodile :p
I have gotten her to stop jumping on people by ALWAYS being on top of her...except with my husband who provokes her and wrestles so that is HIS problem.
We have 3 large dogs so when people come to the door or come over we have trained the dogs to go to their bed and wait until invited over to calmly greet. It takes time but as long as we are on the ball they are.
Good luck

I have a 5 month old DDB and my father has a 4 year old one. My wife had a German Shep that wanted to when he was a puppy. As soon as he started when he was little she would just sternly tell him "no" and push him down if it went that far. Our puppy hasn't had that problem yet, but the few times he did we did that same thing with our Shep. As I know that shepherds are a little more"jumpy." However he is 12yrs old now and hasn't the ability to jump even if he wanted to. But our pup learned with the same stern "no" lesson.

Now my fathers was a 4yr DDB and was a little harder to manage considering he age. We found that the sprayer bottle made her tick. So when she would jump at people or doors we would spray her with the bottle. Not all dogs dislike that idea of spray bottles, but this got her down for the most part. Every now and then a little reminder. A couple drops of vinegar makes the water a big repellent. I
like to get my dogs early at that kind of behaviour.

I refer to my girl as a "Kanga-Bordeaux". She bounces around like Tigger whenever anything is going on (or when we are trying to do heelwork!!!).

I just stop and wait until all four feet are on the ground again, praise and fed. Over, and over, and over. I always have a few bits of kibble in my pocket or stashed on shelves around the house ready to reward the behaviour I want.
