Allergic to Drool

I know that this topic has been broached before but I was unable to find it. I definitely am allergic to Kryten's drool as I can break out in hives where his mouth has been. The strange thing is that it isn't every time that his saliva touches me and when a reaction does occur the hives can range from just a couple of small bumps to looking almost like a second degree burn the hives are that large. It also is getting worse as time goes on.
I am considering going to a doctor but I am currently looking for one as I don't have a family doctor (my childhood one dropped me as a patient as it had been too long since my last visit). Does anyone have any tips that I could try in the meantime to lessen the severity of any reaction. The picture included is what I would consider a low-moderate reaction. The worst was my entire left arm covered in welts at least the size of the large one in the center of the picture.

Could it be a reaction to something in his food? You said it does not happen all the time. Does it itch? How long does it last on your skin? Is it worse on some parts on your skin (like where the skin is thinner)?

Benadryl, a life saver! It may be something he ate or chewed on since It's not all the time. Could be a weed?

It's very itchy. The hives will disappear a few minutes after washing the area but the itch can last for hours on a severe reaction. It's usually located on my arms but that's also the only skin that is exposed now that winter has arrived. I have had the small hives on the side of my face though. I never considered a food connection. It has gotten worse since I changed his food but it started before.

I'm the same way with Oliver's drool. It's weird because Zoomie and Penelope don't bother me. My bumps usually go away within an hour or so on their own.

It looks exactly like the thing wich started the other thread, i don't think we find andd answer for it then. There were many theories like allergies, bacteria, the wiskers been pointy, etc, but no conclution that i remember. I can't tell you that it stop hapening to me, don't know if it had to do with the puppy growing, she not been so bity, or some other thing i'm not aware off. But it stop.

Benadryl is the only thing I can think of that would help. I had that reaction to a tame deer once, I didn't even touch it, it just came up and snoofled me, but something about it made me break out in hives.

My sister gets the same thing from Magnums mouth touching her (drool or not) and benadryl is the only thing that works but it makes her tired so we have found the liquid benadryl which can be applied directly to resolve the issue without taking medicine.

Liquid Benadryl might help if you get it on right away. The cause of hives can be tough to diagnosis. My daughter has an ongoing issue we have never been able to find the cause of even with $$$ of testing. Anything stressful going on that could be contributing to it?

Allergic to drool and mastiff ownership is a bad combination

It just shows how much I love that Little Monster. I really do want to know just what is in mastiff drool however that makes it so different from other dogs. I mean it is thick, slimy, and glitters when dry.

I was just diagnosed with chronic sinusitis with the most likely cause being acute yet prolonged exposure to an allergen. Based on the fact that my reaction to Kryten's drool has been getting worse the doctor figures that is the allergen. Now I really need to figure out what I can do to minimize the negative effects of living with him, hopefully without having to give up some of the stuff I enjoy such as cuddling or wrestling with the big guy. :( Don't worry the one thing I'm not willing to do is give him up, I'll live sick first.

Hi there. I too am allergic to my dog. I wouldn't give him up for the world. I wipe him over with pet allergy wipes most days. Hoover every day to keep down the dander. I find kissing his ears doesn't make me itch lol. As for cuddles... I do a lot but always wash my hands straight after. Good luck with it n if you find a cure please let me know. Carol

In the year+ since I started this thread most of the symptoms have gotten worse but I was able to find a way to manage all but the hives with medication. Nothing seems to help once those have started to form and even a light touch of his jowls is enough to cause small ones to form.
That said I may have accidentally found something non drug related to help with at least the respiratory and sinus symptoms, chiropractic adjustments. I started going 2 weeks ago because of symptoms unrelated to those of my allergy to Kryten, or so I thought. But in those 2 weeks I have seen a reverse progression of both the sinus and respiratory symptoms. Right now I seem to be back to where I was about 3-4 months ago. Thankfully things that took weeks or months to develop seem to be resolving in days.
It turns out that my neck had started to curve in the opposite direction from what it naturally should curve. There are a lot of nerves exiting from between the cervical vertebra, amongst them are ones that help control the sinuses and lung function. With my neck curving the wrong way it was severely impinging on the ability for those nerves to function correctly. It is possible that if my neck can be returned to the proper alignment those symptoms will disappear completely. A fully functioning spine might also allow my body to improve its immune system making it possible for the hives to be eliminated too. I never would have considered chiropractic care for allergies but it might be just what I needed.
An unexpected bonus that has occurred already is that I nolonger feel like I'm going to fall down every flight of stairs I walk down.

So glad you're finding some relief Smokeycat. Have you thought about essential oils? I have very bad allergies and if I diffuse the allergy trio every day they are very well managed. I also keep it on a roller ball to roll on when I have a sneezing attack or get hives. Let me know if you'd like the combo to try.

Smokeycat - That is great news about the chiropractic visits helping. I actually knew someone who was able to get rid of all their allergy symptoms with accupuncture. I'm actually terrified of needles but it's a thought. It might help in conjunction with your chiropractor.

tmricciuto - I would love to know what essential oils you use for allergies. I have very bad grass, tree and pollen allergies. Luckily they only plague me in the spring time for the most part but they are pretty miserable in spring.

I have bad asthma - grass, dust, cats and dogs are the major triggers. I'm on Seretide 2 times per day and inhalers when needed. I had steroids for different periods of time but they have side effects so I hope I won't need them permanently. Eucalyptus oil does help to a certain extent but oils alone can't get me out of respiratory failure.
