  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Another thread about zits.

Thanks marke! Just dab on a couple times a day? At this point I almost feel like we need something to calm it down and start fresh because they are out of control :(
I would use it once a day , it comes in wash or an ointment , it could be an irritant itself , it drys the skin ......... I've never heard of using stridex , but I could see it as being worth a try also , it's ingredient is salicylic acid , it makes sense ........... I would think a vet would go the antibiotic and prednisone direction to do exactly what you said about "calming it down and starting fresh" , which sounds like a good idea to me ................as long as it's not too infected , without the vet i'd guess you could try some Benadryl and some topical cortisone cream and see if it calms it down .....some antibiotics if you have any sure wouldn't hurt , cephalexin would be a good safe choice .....good luck with your guy , i'm gonna guess he's pretty young and maturity will take care of it , it's probably his immune system acting up , maybe hormones ? or if it hasn't happened before maybe he did just lay his chin on something that irritated it ....

I have seen that face before! We did lots of antibiotics and even steroids. Max had them so bad that they would pop open and bleed and were sore. We tried everything. Food: white fish and sweet potato, carrots, liver, apple, banana, dried salmon for treats. Occassional duck jerky. COCONUT OIL now about 4 tablespoons a day. No soy, grains, nuts, chicken byproduct. I wash the stainless stee bowls daily. Fresh water and I dry his face constantly! I use hibiclense (cholorhexidine) soap on warm wet washcloth. leave some soap on the chin. Pat dry. I have used witchazel which is the same stuff in stridex pads minus the benzoil perozide. He hated the vinegar! He was neutered in September. Not sure if it's coincidence that his face cleared up after that and that was the same time I started giving coconut oil. Oscar's mom...you are not a bad mom. Your boy has a problem and you've been working to fix it for some time. You wouldn't beat yourself up if your kid had asthma, right? Just keep looking for the cause. 2x on the trial and error. Oscar still loves you! (just don't do steroids!)

Yea he's 18 months. It's happened here and there in the past but never close to this bad! I'll give it a shot.

Aww thanks max's mom! I hated posting that picture! I can't believe it is this bad :(. You're right though...were fixing it! You did steroids you said...why do you advise against? He's done one round before and a shot when he had some funk on his chest. I know about the dangers of repetitive corticosteroid in humans ...but even if it's the same in animals, he won't be overusing if prescribed again....thoughts? Antibiotics Better than steroids for one round?Where do you get hibiclense? How old is max now?

It's a limited ingredient dog food. Might be worth considering if you are looking to change foods. I have read good things about it. I bought a bag of it and am going to see how the dogs do on it.
Ok...I'll look it up! Thanks Hector!

I haven't ...any success with this?
I've not tried it on any dogs myself but I thought maybe if you are washing his face it would be good to try and keep it properly dry too as if he is still a bit damp and it gets warm in his folds of skin that's then an ideal area for bacteria to multiply.

Steroids were very hard on him. He drank about five gallons of water and peed non stop. I'd put him out. he'd go a bucket, bring him back in, he'd whine and there would be a puddle. He'd pee in his sleep or while laying in his bed. It just ran out from under him. He constantly had to be bathed. He was miserable and it made him so hungry. It clears them up, but it's a false sense of "better". once the steroids are out of the system, it comes right back. Our vet had Max on 2 weeks of antibiotics after his surgery. His face started to clear nicely then. We were extra vigilent about the face washing and I do believe the hibiclense has helped. Someone posted that you have to kill the bacteria first and then keep it at bay. Probiotics are good too. Sometimes though, the zits are not infected... My brother had terrible cystic acne as a teenager and I equate what the dogs are going through to this. Hang in there Oscar!

I agree totally with Max's mom. Cane was the same way on steroids, it was terrible and the acne always came back. The acne is either a "teenage thing" or something auto-immune. Keep your fingers crossed for teenage thing. If you are not seeing any other symptoms like runny poop, yeasty ears, gunk between the toes Then I would assume teenage thing. I would keep it clean, use some sort of drying out agent and wait it out.

If you go with an antibiotic make sure you use a probiotic and use it correctly. Good luck!

I thank you for posting a picture! We are fighting this same thing with Chica and did not know what to call it to search on here. My vet did not recommend any antibiotics or steroids, though said they would prescribe if I wanted them. Just recently we noticed them improving significantly though we're not exactly sure from what. 2-3 weeks ago I decided to try APNO(had it from breastfeeding;)) lol it is a compounded ointment including an anti fungal and antibacterial. If it's safe for babies to ingest I felt ok putting it on her chin. We noticed improvement after just a few applications but not elimination. Next variable was a huge increase in green tripe(1.5 weeks after the APNO) with her meals. And the third addition(3days after tripe increase) was antibiotics prescribed for an abscessed sebaceous cyst. Not sure if this rambling helped you any since we are unsure of what actually cleared it up or if the combination of all 3 is what was needed. Interesting to hear the autoimmune aspect as we are also dealing with much more for her. I'll check into that some more.

You are a great mom:) if I beat myself up every time I had to figure out what was wrong or how to fix my kids or pups I think I'd be institutionalized! Keep at it, all we can do is our best.

Maggie - what type of toys is he chewing on? Angus gets them from just about anything plastic. Kongs, Nyla - all of them. Also might try running his toys through the dishwasher or washing machine depending on what they are to get rid of any lingering bacteria. We do ours once a week and it has really helped. Poor Oscar - hope you get this under control soon. Hugs and kisses from us!

Do you have Fluoridated water??
Just throwing this one out there, because it gives ME chin acne... google fluoroderma for more info. I switched to un-fluoridated toothpaste, and it's made a huge difference for me.

Check with your local water authority, and if you do... I'd switch to bottled spring water (check lab results on those for 'natural' fluorides, too)... at least for a month or two, and see if it makes a difference. Might be worth the experiment...

Hopefully teenage thing! No other symptoms with it. We used to use a probiotic daily but haven't in a while. Recommended with antibiotics ?

Dumb question but isn't all water fluoridated? Tap water that is? Bf is a dentist but we drink filtered water from a reverse osmosis system. I honestly should probably be giving Oscar that too though

Thanks Tric! It's good to hear from you and angus! I haven't seen you guys here in a while! He has a kong that he chews on from time to time but mostly he Carrus around a stuffie and sucks on a giant giraffe named Gina. He suckles on her a lot. I wash her every week or week and a half along with most but haven't been doing the kong regularly! I will get in it :)

How's Oscar's chin doing? I had another thought - chamomile tea, cooled down of course can be a great alternative to getting them to heal up. Thanks for missing us. Between oldest daughter moving out of state, flooding from all the rain, Mother Nature and blowing down trees and then the holidays life got in the way of the Forum for a couple months.

Oscar's Mom...I never answered your questions. Max is almost 2. Fixed at 19 months. Hibiclense is the same as Chlorhexadine soap and I bought it at the pharmacy. I hope poor Oscar clears up soon!

Busy bee! I bet angus misses her :(Chamomile tea is a good idea...I think I heard that somewhere before. We've been using the Stridex pads regularly and I think better! It's amazing how much funk is on his chin! Ick. Bet appt Wednesday's but I'm staying away from steroids. Maybe antibiotics to get the bacteria and infection out!
