I'll go ahead and put this out there: I'm sure you love your pup; however breeding before 2 years can lead to a lot of health problems. Also, you can't do any health testing prior to this either. The big thing you're going to hear is what's so special about her? Even though she may be a great companion, she is still a mix. This forum is a fabulous place to learn anything and everything you need to know! Please post pictures of your girl and ask lots of questions before you decide to breed :). Welcome!

Im head shaking at this one.Im sorry if i am rude but if you had took the time to read this forum you would see no one uses there dogs as breeding machines.I dont normally reply to these posts good people like ruthcatrin always steps up.I have nothing against mixes and im sure yours is beautiful but do you know if her parents were healthy had good nature.
Please take your time and read what can go wrong, can you guarantee good homes too many end up in wrong hands and in the pounds. Why are you breeding. She is very young.

Glen, none of these people ever bother to read the forum first. It would save me a heck of alot of typing if they did.

Never mind the stupidity of posting an email that uses an actual name and a phone number on a public forum that anyone in the world can read. It took me about 5 minutes using google to track down Nicholas Bles in El Paso TX, now the only question is if he's the one married to Stacy or Karen.......or maybe its the same guy, I didn't find a divorce record, but that doesn't mean much, I wasn't trying hard.

Anyway, onto the actual question....

Your bitch is way to young to be bred. Breeding her before she's two (bare minimum) will do bad things to her. Never mind that these dogs aren't mature till well after the age of 2, which means that their temperment doesn't properly show up till after then, as well as their physical structure changes....

Before breeding your bitch needs the following health certs:

Hip cert from either OFA or Pennhip (may require a specialist)
Elbow Cert from OFA (may require a specialist)
Eye cert from either OFA or CERF (DOES require seeing one of a specific list of specialists)
Heart cert from OFA (DOES require seeing one of a specific list of specialists)
Thyroid cert from OFA (requires bloodwork to be sent to a specific lab)
Kidney Cert from OFA

Plus both bitch and stud need to be tested for brucellosis before breeding, its a canine STD which not only causes sick adults, but also dead puppies, and is human transmissible (and no, you don't have to have sexual contact with your dog to get it).

Then there's the money, stud fees, medical for the stud if the bitch decides she hates him on sight, or for the bitch if the stud tries to kill her in frustration. Medical for the bitch during pregnancy even if nothing goes wrong, emergency medical if something goes wrong during pregnancy. Emergency medical if something goes wrong during the birth (an emergency c-section costs a fortune). Medical for both mom and pups after birth till the pups are at least 8 weeks old. Emergency medical if they get sick after birth..........

Then, what happens if you can't place all the pups? These dogs can have litters of 10 pups or more, are you prepared to actually provide a home for all those puppies if you can't find homes? What about if the home you send a pup too turns out to suck, can you take back that pup a couple years down the road?

Then there's WHY are you breeding her. Whats so great about her that makes it worth the money and stress of breeding. Sure, temperament is nice, and is certainly part of the equation, but its only PART of the equation. Is her physical structure sound? What has she done? Agility titles? Scent dog titles? Obedience title? Therapy cert?

ruthcatrin.....you carry on typing if it educates one person its worth it,iv had to say the same to many people, one idiot 2 weeks ago asked us if we still had rotties he wanted to breed his bitch that can hardly walk with bad hips she is only 3 just because he wants another one i was trying for an hour to explain why not to.He hadnt even took her to a vet to get help. How can these people call themselves animal lovers and say they love there pets when all they are doing is wanting to make a quick quid and putting pets at risk.Il shut up now i could go on forever.lol.

Wow! They just keep popping out! I think we just had one last week who was looking for a stud for her bullmastiff something cross. Et voila! Here is another one! ruthcatrin, you should have your message saved and cut and paste it for every idiot who decides to breed for no particular reason, like musicdeb does with the new owner tutorial.

@ruth just add a ( applies to blah ) after w/e item or check with your club lol save you a bit of time lol.... I see these and think / break out the popcorn.... there will be a show starting soon.

Think I said it before I always wanted to get a dog I could breed a time or two cause my grandma did it and why not make some money back if I spend that much. After reading these posts, posts on problems with poorly bred dogs in health and temperment. I will never do that unless I win the lottery and can actually start a real breeding program for the betterment of breed .

<3 how passionate you all are about it and makes me shake my head at some of the posts and adds I see for sale of these Mutts.

I've considered just doing a list of all the health tests I can come up with (it'd be insanely long if I included all the DNA tests) for these but I am actually trying to be realistic when I do these....

If I were inclined to actually breed my dogs Apollo's breeder would be more than willing to mentor me (as it is she helps me screen the requests for Apollo as stud, which I TOTALLY appreciate!). And that is definitely the way I suggest going if you ever really want to get into breeding. Find a GOOD breeder in your breed who's willing to walk you through everything. But yah, you're not really going to make much back, if anything, by the time its all said and done. Not if you've done it right. Heck, a while back I figured out just plain FOOD costs for Apollo's first two years with us as several grand, never mind vet costs, and doggy equipment costs and your TIME (just the man hours for managing a pregnant and birthing and nursing bitch and pups is insane).....
