Compatability?

First off, I'm no breeder nor do I plan on breeding, this is just my curious bug at it again.

I've read that when you are planning on breeding they test the compatility of the two dogs. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? Features, size, temperament, health, etc? And what does it mean when the dogs are NOT compatible? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Main reason I'm asking is cause we have friends with a little Pit bitch puppy that they plan on breeding. They know she is a little runty, and you can tell she's going to be small. Their plan is to breed her with a nice big pit and hope that it balances out the sizes. My first thought was "yay another byb making it up as they go ". Second thought was could that hurt their bitch? Is matching size important?

Each breeder is different but the breeders who I brought dogs from always breed dogs who seem to "compliment" or wanted to enhance one another. Adding strengths to the others weakness. This could be size, type, temp, etc. For example the breeder where I got Stone from had a bitch who was more "refine" so she breed to a dog that was more "robust" In turn she also hoped that in addition to added substance pups would attain the mother's topline, structure, and angles. So many goals a breeder can have in mind for breeding, but breeding for GP yea...not cool.

If the stud is to big then there is a risk of the pups being to large for the bitch to birth safely yes.

The size difference has to be pretty significant though, there are some crazy crosses out there

This is my concern for the bitch, she's still a puppy so she has some growing to do, but you can just tell she's going to be small. We're not 'close' friends so I can't exactly call them out for being BYB's, they probably wouldn't even care, but she's such a sweet little girl I hope they don't ruin her :(

On a side note I found this out today cause my bf said we need to be careful when our pups are together because she is not fixed. I said: NO, they need to keep her away when she's in heat or anywhere near heat! Their responsibility, not ours, it's our house! Kujo really loves her though, they'd play for hours if I let him lol. I heard his first howl last night cause she was locked in their car and crying about it, Kujo could hear her and was very upset about, so he let out a nice long howl. Sweetest and saddest thing ever lol.
