Cost of Raw feeding vs kibble...also starter protein?

Good to hear the breeder is willing to help with surgery. :) Puppies can do very well on raw. Check out dogfoodadvisor.com for kibble ratings and customer feedback.

You will be fine feeding rabbit as a first protein. Just use the meat and bones to start but after a couple of proteins are being eaten with solid stools you can move to whole prey. Try to shoot them with a rifle instead of a 12 ga so you can remove the lead if it doesn't exit. When my pup was small he had trouble with turkey bones and would just strip them so try them but you may have to wait till he's a bit older.

Costco has chicken for 99c per pound and pork sirloin tip roast for $1.99. Add your venison and rabbit and you have enough protein sources for staple use and can occasionally add other stuff when you stumble across it. You can use the venison organs as your organ staple when the pup is ready and supplement that with others when available. Do you have hog or javelina in your area of TX? Maybe time to expand your hunting repertoire!

Offering you a new pup is standard procedure by the breeder to weasel out of contributing to costs. She knows you have already bonded and won't give up the pup. Push her to share the medical bills.

Orijen is fine but raw is better! Don't be bullied into feeding kibble by your vet.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Sorry I missed your mention of hog in the first post. You sound well equipped to start with! Let us know if you need any more advice!

Thanks so much. No, I won't let the vet deter me. He told me not to start obedience until she's 6 months old! Really???? So, after her next round of shots, off to obedience and after we finish her meds we'll start on raw. We'll hunt the rabbits with a .22, have to get too close with a shotgun and they're pretty fast. lol Talked to the other lease members and they'll save their organs for me. Yay! I guess it's time to buy her her own freezer. :D

Unfortunately, you may be right. I worked as a surgical vet tech at this practice and had very high regard for this vet. He's usually very progressive, not old school, but.....I'm not necessarily agreeing with him on much right now. Have to get a second opinion on the hernia anyway, and know another good vet in town. We'll see what he has to say when I take her in.
