DDB prices?

Hello,

I was wondering if a puppy budget of $1500 would be reasonable to purchase a DDB puppy, "show-quality-ISH", from a reputable breeder? Or is this way too low? My wife has put her foot down and we came up with this for our budget. I say "show-quality-ISH" as I am not strict about it but I would like a pup that conforms closely to breed standard.

I have looked at a breeder close by and his puppies were $2K for no show, and $3K for show. He was a VERY high-end breeder by anyone's standard. Were his prices pars for the course? I'm not looking for cheap, but I do have a wife to keep!

Thanks

2k for no show and 3k for show sounds about right. It's all about the health and lineage of their breeding stock.
You could always take what your wife will let you spend, put it in a seperate account, and add a little to it here and there. Or you could "luck out" and come across more affordable pups. I think if you keep hunting around you could come up with something.

If he's a truly reputable breeder then one of his pet quality dogs should be fine as long as you aren't planing on showing. 2k sounds about right for a pet quality pup from a reputable breeder, parents should have had all the recommended genetic health tests and should be AKC champions (at least one of them, preferably both). If that's the case then 2k sounds good.

Thanks for the response. I was a little worried about it. From the little research that I did on prices (they are hard to find), it seemed that DDBs were going for about $2500, 5 to 7 years ago.

He is. Last year his DDB was 1st in the country and I have been to his facility; he is top notch. The only problem with his “pet quality” puppies is that they are next to his "show quality" puppies, and I am a sucker for a good looking dog. I tend to only want the best looking puppy that is well behaved once I have seen it. Like I said before, if it were just me I would have already forked over the money for a puppy but I have a wife to keep happy. She can’t justify spending that kind of cash when we got our BM for a lot less. We were lucky and found him at a small breeder who showed locally in small events.

If you do not plan on showing him, and most reputable breeders will have a spay/neuter clause, get the Pet quality. Just make sure you get the one with the best temperment. As you know, what he looks like as a pup, can change big time by the time he is an adult. You really can't tell if he is show or pet quality until they are 6 months anyway.

Unless you can see an obvious fault on a puppy that goes against the standard, then I think that DDB puppies should sell for the same price regardless of what the future owner plans on doing with it (showing it or just constantly loving on it as a pet). There are many cases where a smaller puppy ends up being as big or bigger than the pick of the litter. I think that with as slowly as a DDB matures, it is immature to say which puppy is better quality at such a young age. So I think the going price should be about $2500.00 PLUS shipping regardless.

I bought my 1st DDB for $1500 for a 1st time breeder who had a really nice female and paid a stud service to one of the top DDB studs at the time. My pup from that litter was one of the best dogs ive ever had (looks wise,personality,etc)... I never showed him either but to me he was picture perfect. He had several littermates that went on to show and competed very well. I later bought a "show quality" female for $2,000 from a larger more well known kennel, and although she was a good dog and had a very sweet personallity she was the farthest thing from show quality you could get.. Do your research maybe look for some younger kennels that are breeding to top stud dogs. Talk w/ the breeders and try and establish somewhat of a relationship and let them know what you want and what you can afford, you might be surprised.

Cowboy B,

Thank for the comment on our Tommy Boy. We did alot of research before getting him. We are really happy with him. We think that he is top notch. This past weekend we showed him. At 11 months old, he got BOB against an AKC Grand Champion who is almost 4 yrs. old.

Thanks Cowboy,

Of course, I am just bragging but I forgot to mention that the Gr. Champ that Tommy won against is also one of the top 25 DDB's in the nation. Sorry about the brag but we just love our boy.
