Dehydrated buffalo liver offer/question for you folks

I have access to a fairly large quantity of buffalo liver at the price of $2/lb.

I was considering offering to buy and ship it to folks who might be interested but I've done temperature controlled shipping before and its a pain, so that was NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

But dehydrated....now that would be easy to ship.

Is that something anyone might be interested in? I'd dehydrate it, and can either leave it in slices or cut it into treat sizes. My dogs LOVE the buffalo liver even more than they like the beef liver (which they also like), and they love it even more when its dehydrated.

Price would be the $2, plus $2 for my cost of getting it and dehydrating it, plus either $4 or $6 for shipping depending on the final weight and the box I can fit it in.

I have never tried this before. Excuse my ignorance (I have never fed raw or anything) but once dehydrated, would it be used a Chewy or treat? Because it is dehydrated it would not be something that "goes bad", right? I am always looking for something new to give Ruger.

It wouldn't go bad as such, though if you're looking at storing it for more than say 3 or 4 weeks stashing it in the freezer might not be a bad idea since I don't have a way to measure moisture left and thus can't guarantee the complete lack there of (which is whats needed to make it last forever).

You could definetly use it as a treat though you'd need to experiment as to how much he could tolerate as too much CAN cause diarrhea, how much is to much in one day varies a bit from dog to dog, for Apollo I say 1/4lb (raw) a day max though he can tolerate more if I mess up. 1/4lb though is about a full slice though, not a tiny amount.

Also I don't HAVE to cut it up before dehydrating. It cuts quite easily after dehydration, so I could leave it in the slices for you and you could cut it up as you felt you wanted.

Lemme rephrase that, I definetly don't get as much moisture out as the store bought version as mine is more pliable. So for long term storage stashing it in the freezer would be a good idea.

Oooh that sounds good for treating. We have a dehydrator but you're right it would be a major pain to do perishable shipping like that. Love using liver as an "uber-treat" for exceptional behavior but I haven't made any in a long time. Definitely interested :)

If someone wants to buy a several pounds frozen and pay shipping I'll talk, but it would have to be overnight, in an insulated box, with freezer packs....NOT CHEAP, or fun. On the other hand dehydrated goes into a ziplock, into a box, and off it goes.

Ok. Message me to set it up, I currently expect to be able to get over to the farm sometime next week (I'll be buying more meat for us too, LOVE buffalo meat) so I'd potentially be able to mail it out the week after.

Note: they plan to butcher another animal end of Oct-ish, but as of last week they still hadn't sold most of the liver from the last two, so for the moment I've got lots of 'stock' to access. That is subject to change of course if someone besides me starts buying it up.

I'm interested but I do not have a big freezer. I live in an apartment so space is limited. I could handle about 3-4 lbs of the dehydrated liver.

Message me and we'll set it up.

How much extra do you think you'll have? I'll take as much as you want to deal with.

Last I was over there they still had at least 20 or so lbs (I didn't ask for an exact count), depending on what exactly these guys all want we'll see. Message me, we'll figure it out.

I am interested, Ruth. I would love to try Ruger on the Dehydrated stuff. I could go for a 3 or 4 pounds if you have it to send.

I would love to buy some but I guess shipping to the UK is out of the question?

International shipping is not cheap. And I'm not sure how your customs folks would handle dehydrated liver thats not "prepackaged" with all the nutritional info and what not? Lemme get back to you on it?

Ruth, what do you think the dehydrated weight would be on 10lbs?

I wasn't smart enough to weigh out the last batch I dehydrated before starting to feed it. I'm planning on doing up more for m this weekend so I'll weigh that and get back to you. I'm figuring on using flat rate boxes for orders of more than a pound or two though....

Well, the 1 lb I just dehydrated weighed about 5 ounces after less than 24hrs drying (I have an cheap scale, but was a bit over the 4ounce mark). Now it was thinner sliced than the last batch I did, so that may vary, but we'll work with that to begin with.

I called the farm owner yesterday and am waiting a response. Didn't expect one today as they were spending all day at a function in an attempt to drum up more business. Sunday at the earliest, and if I don't hear from her by monday I'll call her again. That'll give me a more accurate figure on what they have for liver (I know what I saw, I know what I saw wasn't all they had, but things change).

Ok, buffalo liver is currently sold out. I have attempted to message everyone who contacted me to set up shipping out what we've got. If you messaged me or posted here that you wanted some and I've not messaged you please message me.

ANGELBEARS: I attempted to message you and it told me your mail box was full!
