Dog names!!

Some names are obvious (like naming your mastiff Godzilla :p) other's aren't. I'm curious to know why to decided to name your dog what you did and the story--if you have them--of your aha! Moment. Here is mine:

It was about a week after I had brought my 8 week old short haired saint bernard puppy home and I STILL hadnt decided on a name! I had a list but none seemed quite right. I had already began the socailization process as much as I was able (I still had a few shots left to give him before I could take him out) and I had set myself the daunting task of introducing him to 100 people (and their pets) before he was 3 months old!! And I was getting ready for a friend of mine and her 4 month old kittens Topsy and Turvy to come over. So far my pup had taken everything in stride but when these kittens arrived he was at a total loss. What WERE they? He was totally confused, and the longer he was around the kittens the more confused he got. Why didn't they bark? What was that wierd sound they made? Why were they so small? And he did this cute thing where he titled his head to the side and one of his ears raised up ever so slightly--as much as a floppy earned dog's ears can raise up--and barked a question. It was because of this that I named him Vex (his full name is Vexation, meaning confusion). And it is a look he still gives me quiet frequently (I nearly named him Spock though because of how much it reminded me of that quirk of the eyebrow Spock always gave), Especailly when I talk to him for a long time or I'm upset.

Branka is a Slavic name and means glorious protector/guardian. I had a list of names I liked, Branka, Chai (my fav black tea), and Scout. My 3 year old added Kevin to the list. I let her pick the name so for 2 days Branka was Kevin, but then she decided to change it to Branka and I told her if she changed it it had to stay. So her name is officially Branka Kevin :)

Lucius my Doberman is named after the Roman emperor. So he's officially Lucius Verus.

My Beagle/Basset is PJ, Pearl Jam. My husband named her after his favorite band.

So I guess all of my dogs have middle names :)

Jiggers is what the breeder called a Golden Irish (golden retriever/Irish setter) which to me sounds like some sort of light ale. So sticking in the theme of alcohol he was named Jiggers.
For my EM I wanted a name that would fit what the breeder figures will be a very large boy that wasn't predictable or common. After a couple of days brainstorming we chose Kryten. It was inspired by a character on the British comedy Red Dwarf. Hopefully he makes me laugh as much but is not as neurotic as that character.

I've always liked the name Mason and it's been on my short list for some time. Also on the list, were Liam and Presley. I think I subconsciously chose Mason because it was reminiscent of Simon, my previous boy. I totally dig people names for dogs. People and food. (Bean and Anchovy were also on the list. LOL)

Hot Chai latte's are the only thing I every get @ starbucks.

Nice nice to all of you :) my list has changed over the years. What used to consist of names like Kira and Rufus has changed to names like Strider (after Lord of the Rings--perfect for a great Dane I think) and Felony for the boys and Iniquity (would call her Ini naturally).

Though their are two names I've always wanted. I'm not a cat person but if I ever do get a cat I've determined to name him Peeves just so I can introduce him as 'This is my pet peeve' lmao. I also always wanted to get a mutt and name him miscellaneous lol I thought it would be fitting but I'm not sure how to shorten it down. I suppose I could call him misc but :p meh

Oh! My parents have a dog named Meh (which IS a word, it's Yiddish and it means neither good nor bad, just meh). It's really fitting too because he isn't really big but he's not small. His coat isn't light but its not dark. He isn't yappy but he isn't quiet. Everything he does is very meh lol

Well as an aspiring brickmason (i know i know, not a common profession for a girl. But I'm not a very common girl lol) I'm definatly in favor of the name Mason!! And I'd love to see a giant dog named Anchovy!!

Budda got his name cause the way he sat as a pup, he looked like a little fat budda.

Slim is well, slim

Duke the dane cause hos tail is on constant wag and when it hits it sounds like dukedukedukeduke

Kona, well I like coffee and Kona is a extratropical cyclone with winds up to 100mph. Kona lows can cause week long rain, hail storms, flash floods, land slides and heavy tree killing wind.

Be my guest!! :3 lol and that's a lot better nickname for miscellanious then misc!! I've been trying to think of one for AGES!! Now I can actually use it as a viable name if I ever adopt a mutt ^^

My wife has had the name for our dog picked for quite a few years. Gunny is short for Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps and since my days in, she's always thought it would be the perfect name for our future Mastiff.

My first DDB I named Bentley, because I was college student and I'd never paid that much for a dog before. I equated it to being like the Rolls Royce of the dog world, so Bentley fit perfectly.

My current boy is actually named after his grandfather, but I call him by his nickname, Heathen, most of the time because for his first few years that's exactly what he was!

Tempyst (my girl that lives with my mom) got her name because when her breeder sent me pictures of her she looked like a little she was a feisty little firecracker, but I couldn't find a name that sounded pretty and equated to "firecracker", so I chose Tempesta di Fuoco, meaning fire storm.....though we usually call her ChaCha (she's kinda "special" if you catch my drift)

You could always use Lane or Laney as a nickname

Daisy - EM - because she was the runt of the litter and is a delicate petite flower
Rascal - Pom - When I brought him home and created a playpen using some of that wire rack shelving that is 16 inches high he climbed over it immediately.
Maggie Mae - red head classic pom, needed a good irish name and Mae is my mothers middle name. Only grand kids she is getting from me.
Mouser - white chihuahua that looked like a mouse, although with the weight she has gained she looks more like an albine pot bellied pig
