EMs Are Worthless Guardians??

When this thread started I thought about your former 2 Em's foundation to a couple lines right? Good working dogs . I still would never buy an EM if I was looking for a guard though

Huffing, puffing, and ruffing does not make a protection dog...and mastiff owners seldom recognize this. This is true for the Neapolitan as well...and in fact is true for any breed of dog. Many mastiff breeds (Fila, Neapolitan, EM, etc) will huff and puff...but I have found the majority to fold (go into avoidance) LONG BEFORE taking any real pressure. I doubt this is true for old word dogs.

I should say however, a fit mastiff even if not "hard" will still probably serve 90% of the protective needs the average person asks for...deterent or in home use only.

I agree Tig. Even tested and trained dogs are just a theory. Untill someone kicks the dog piss out of one, you dont know shit. But I would tend to think an old school neo against a old school em, the neo would be more protection and em still more guard.

I'm not sure I believe that. A guy can look so good in martial arts and tear it up sparring. But lose his mind when he gets some real pain. Unless your inflicting the kinda pain to the animal that all his fight or flight is kicked in, I dont see how you can say 100% what a dog will do.

Lee I often Refer to Ceasar quite frequently on here. I'm still looking for the video in which he went after two decoys at Butch's place. IMO that was the best I've ever seen of both for an EM and his performance. All the other videos don't show his true potential. I am not familiar with Eclispe last I heard Jonny had Ceasar.

my 7.5 old, Gus has met my daughter & hubby numerous times, they came to the front screen door the other day, un announced, Gus saw them & growled, first time he has growled (apart from at a kite surfers kite), i have no doubt he will be fine, i have had extensive experince with BM's in the past, Rotties, etc i dont want a dog to savage everyone or bark at the gate all day, these are nurotic dogs, if that is what a guard dog is, then its not for me, Gus lays around, of course he does, he is content in his enviroment, but with love & affection i can guarantee that when & if needed he will step up. these people with so called "guard" dogs that bag other breeds need to research befor opening there uneducated mouths, I can make any dog savage, not that hard. wake up idiot. Maybe they are using theirs as penis extensions.

I think you need to open a book. First off a guard dog and a protection dog aint the same. Second, we are talking about breeds breed for a job. Not savage animals. Not skitish, not scared, not none of that shit. And we are talking proven facts. Not some half cocked theory or emotional statements but plain old reality. Now I'm happy you feel so good about your dog. I dont know where any studies or theories based on any type of reality can be located, that would support the love and affection makes a protector theory.

My savage dont bark at the fence all day nor savage people who she should not. Thats called being responsible. But wonder you ass where you aint got no business, she will savage that ass

I got 2 things and I will try to keep the story short. When I was around 15 or 16 we all ran around with our dogs I had a huge Basset hound and my friend had the dopiest biggest EM you ever saw. Like the Sandlot sized dog. We would play football in his yard that was next to this nuts house. They nut would yell at us all the time and throw dirt clods and other crap at us. One day we were all riled up and playing hard and the nut came out of his garage with a shovel and went towards my friend yelling he was gonna bash his head in. My basset charged after this guy and got hit in the side. Well Brutis the EM saw this and went total ninja ape shit and went for this guy. The nut bashed Brutus in the head with the shovel but Brut just powered on and bit the guy on the arm. We all heard the bone break as the dog took the guy down but he just laid across the guys chest with the broken arm in his mouth and growled. My friends dad came out and dragged the dog off and into the house and called the cops. Brutus got what looked like a hundred stitches in his head and Boomer my basset had broken ribs but was pretty much okay. They nut was charged with attempted assault with intent to cause bodily injury. And both his arm bones were broke. You never know what dog will be a protector a Basset or an EM.

And you know I love my breed so here is the second thing.

Meet Bublik 220Lb BB doing best. I really like the look on the decoy's face. Like "Hey that hurts"

Yesterday morning it was raining and my husband wanted to go play in the rain. He went out to the barn and put a black Contractors trash bag on like a poncho. I let daisy outside and she just barked and wouldn't leave the porch so I let her back in. She came and laid down on my feet. When she saw him approaching the deck she jumped up barking and ran to the screen door and jumped up and put her paws on the glass, a ridge up her back, barking her fool head off.

I call that guarding. :). Would I expect her to take down an intruder that is beating on her? No, but she might. I don't ever want her to be put in that position. I'd blow the intruder away before it became necessary. She gave me plenty of warning. :)

You are correct. Thats a awesome guard dog. Maybe even a great protector. But the latter is not yet tested. But like I say, 99% will never need more than a half ass guard dog let alone a good old fashioned show

Dad did when he got the trash bag off and was allowed back in the house. :) I have realized that I'm the problem when ever Daisy is growly and not friendly to strangers. If those same strangers approach when Mike is holding her leash she is fine. :)

Omigosh, he needs to meet Harlequin Delilah Rose aka Harleigh. She definitely does her job of protecting me and my home.
