I know I see cones that are not like lamp shades but are more like flattened donuts. The eyes can be pretty painful and I hope that after the swelling starts to subside it is easier on you all :( For sure make sure you always have someone there to help, also check to see if there is a different medication that might lessen the frequency that you have to put them in for. I am sure that it might sting a little at the moment which won't help matters :(

When Kaz had his surgery it was much different. I am so sorry Baci is going thru all this pain and you having to put up with the cone of shame as I know it can not only be frustrating to Baci but to you as well. When I brought Kaz home, he had a cone also but I never needed to put it on him because he did not even bother with his eyes. I dont think he was even in any pain because it was like he never even had the surgery. I would think it would be ok to take it off so you can put the medication in her eyes and also, I would think you could even give her breaks from it as long as you are watching her closely. The reason it is there is so she does not paw at her eye. She can't lick it unless she has a super long tongue LOL...and when she gets the zoomies, there is not much you can do to calm her down as I know that running and what not may aggravate it a little...nothing the cone can prevent anyway...I really hope she heals up quickly from this and there is no recurrence with her cherry eye..I would hate to have to hear that she had to ultimately have it removed in the end...and possibly even causing some scar tissue in the process....

Keep us all updated..This can be your diary for Baci..Big HUGS from Kaz!!

Milton,

To be honest I don't remember any of the removals of cherry eye that we did at the clinic when I worked there (keeping in mind that was 10 to 12 years ago) being overly painful either but so much changed I wasn't sure. If Baci is in that much pain I think it would warrant a call to the vet and perhaps a re-check to make sure that she is comfortable.

It never was....I worked in a vet clinic before I became a nurse...sometimes I wish I had stayed with the animals :-( ..anyway....I believe Baci had the pocket and tuck technique where Kazmaier had the removal...but still, I dont believe the pain was supposed to be that great and I always thought that recovery time was 10 - 14 days with the cone being left on for up to 5-7 days and as far as I am concerned, it can be taken off for medication administration..what damage can he possibly do within a matter of seconds while the cone is taken off for administration of the drops to the eyes..seems like common sense...but that is just my opinion...Keep us all updated...I just hope she feels better soon!!

I think the issue with her pain is that the ligaments were severely bent and needed to be straightened. This Dr has done hundreds of these and to her memory she hasn't had one as stubborn as Baci's. She ended up have to excise the one on the left (cherry eye) and repair. The ligament on the right straightened out ok. Even tho we used all the meds to lessen the inflammation on the cherry, it was still very large and irritated even after 2 months. So, putting it in the pocket was a big deal. They look better this afternoon altho she still looks like the hound of hell with two red eyes. She let me put in the ointment at 1 with minimal holding. Yay. But, I did give her lots of pain meds an hour or so before. Will call about the cone, everything you're saying makes perfect sense. I had actually bought a comfy cone, but she said that wouldn't work. Bummer for the Bac. And, just for the record, sleeping on a dog's orthopedic bed does NOT make for a good nights rest. Just didn't want to leave her alone. lol

Get the vet to give you some doggy downers that you can hid in some cheese or hamburger. Sedate Baci as much as is safe to reduce the discomfort once she is mellow apply any eye drops or ointments that you need. I had to do it this way with Dozer's brother Maxx. The cone was busted several times before he was able to go without it. But sedating him really made a difference.

She's doing MUCH better. Swelling has gone down some, and meds aren't such an issue anymore. Hubby and I were talking and thought that the aggression yesterday morning might have been because her eyes were so swollen that she basically couldn't see. How frightening for her. I should've realized it, I thought perhaps it was pain and some of it probably was, but not being able to see. Ugh. Tail is now up and wagging, and she's wanting to play. Hallelujah! We're on the short rows now! :)

Thanks to everyone for all their support! No one likes to see anything in pain, especially their fur babies. I'm so glad she's feeling better and I can see her beautiful grey eyes again!

Ohhh the poor baby! Look at her in that cone of shame :( . Your right about the swelling though....it almost looks as if she still has the cherry. Did just the one eye pop or did they both pop? It looks like in the before picture just the one?
