We feed our lab/mix Blue Buffalo Duck formula as he has bad skin allergies. We are going to move our Mastiff Payton over to it in the next week or two as Bear our lab/mix keeps sneaking a kibble or two and then his itching flairs up. I love the BB stuff personally and they have TONS of different formulas, I do steer clear of the salmon one as the smells of their gas was just too darn rough for me to handle!

Cheers!

Awesome that you saved him and love his name! Like raechemae said you ccan PM smart_family, she is a nutrition guru and always seems eager to help. She recommended earthborn holistics to me and my boy loves it and has zero problems. To change his food you have to transition him over slowly.

That works! I wasn't sure if you were going to be able to get it, which was why I suggested a different flavor of the Blue. Cool!

Glad you are getting the food side sorted and hope you have success with that. On another note I bathed my two the other night, it’s the second time I have done this at home with Bear (Akita) and first time for Mooshi (Tibetan Mastiff). Usually I take them to a friend who is a groomer but I am trying to save money. Anyway…I took them because Mooshi needed her nails clipping, they are black and I am a big chicken to do it myself still. Whilst there my friend ‘blasted’ both dogs for me to help get rid of any loose fur, especially in Bear, and suggested that I either invest in a grooming blaster, it looks like a vacuum but blows rather than sucks, and blast them weekly OR you can do it with a hair dryer. It helps with loose fur and getting rid of dust so you need to bath less as well. I thought it was pretty good advice and am going to start shopping around for a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] had blaster.

Yes MM, I call those force dryers. You may spend about $150-200 on them but they are totally worth it. I'd suggest maybe doing it outside though bc if a dog is blowing it's coat, it will look like it's snowing dog hair. I used these dryers in the grooming salon I worked in & they were an arm saver especially with double coated breeds. You would not BELIEVE the amount of hair you can blow off a husky. Even an Akita has a lot of hair if they aren't brushed regularly! I think a regular hair dryer might help a little but I don't think you're going to get the same results as one of the bigger dryers.

Apollo's breeder recommended we get one. Haven't gotten around to it yet, but oh yah, come spring I think I'm going to want one.....

And make sure you buy a good pair of goggles as well cause man oh man does the fur fly. Like raechiemay said, its snows fur and it gets in your eyes and is super freakin irritating!

Yes!!! I cannot tell you how annoying it is to pull dog hair out of your eyes! It was a daily occurrence when I was grooming. You can buy a cheap pair of googles from any hardware store I would imagine.

For short haired dogs try a zoom groom, then finish some sort of soft bristle brush.
Zoom groom outside, tons of dead coat comes off! You can use this with a wet or dry coat.
