Hello! Breed question!

I rescued my dog, and Ive been told he's a bullmastiff by peoples guesses, but now Ive seen the presa canario, and he also looks like he could be one of those! Ive searched high and low, and I cannot find any info as to what the difference is between them, and how I could tell the difference by looking at him... Any help is VERY much appreciated! Thanks

The only major differences I was able to find is that Presas tend to be a little smaller (weight-wise, about 110lb for a Bullmastiff female, 85lb for a Presa female) and Presas have (or should have) a more sloping topline (down from rump to shoulders). Of course, Bullmastiff ears aren't typically cropped at all and a Presa's would be, although with a shelter dog who can tell? Similar colors, build, etc. This is only coming from my experience with Bullmastiffs, as I'm not familiar with Presas in a practical sense.

EDIT:
Looking at pics of both breeds, it looks like the Presa doesn't have as short a muzzle as the Bullmastiff (more wrinkles on the Bull) and is longer in the body compared to leg length. Wiki has something about a "cat-like" gait, but I'm not sure how diagnostic that is.

thanks everyone for the responses! Im new to this, but I will definitely try to post a pic of my boy! Im leaning toward bullmastiff, because he is definitely not a smaller dog :) He is about 115lbs right now, and around 2-1/2 so he's still growing!!! Thanks again everyone! Trying to post pics now...

OK i think i did this right! He should show up in my profile pic, and to MARROWSHARD, I do notice he has the slope from rump to shoulders.... so yes, still very perplexed! Cant wait to see what you guys think! Thanks for the help! :)

Hard to see his muzzle there. I've got a friend who has a Blackmouth Cur and he looks about like your pic, but like I say it's hard to see.

oh and I saw pics of blackmouth curs... they are adorable~! But he's definitely not that - their snouts are too skinny... he has a block head as you can see in the last pic! Lol

oh i never thought of that.... ive never seen any pics of a mix like that, so I cant say... all I know is he most strongly (in my opinion) resembles a bullmastiff, but he DOES have the slope from his rump to shoulders the way the presa canarios do... but presa canarios seem more short and stocky... my boy is tall and very muscular, but not stocky... although the vet believes he still has some more weight to put oN!

Okay that muzzle pic clears it up a little, definitely not a Blackmouth. I think she looks like a Bullmastiff, much more than a Corso. I tossed up some pics earlier today of my female bullmastiff if you needed a comparison ("Photo and Artwork" section). Actually, the shelter told us she was a DDB if you can believe that. Brindle and 106lbs ... we figured Bullmastiff based on guesswork as well.

DDB = Dogue de Bordeaux or French Mastiff. A lot of people on this forum have some REALLY nice looking DDBs, but they're definitely not Bullmastiffs. DDB can't be brindle, for starters, only apricot or fawn (correct me if I'm wrong, guys), so it was a dead giveaway with Ebony.

I can put a few pics up here too:

(She's not fat, she was a puppy factory before we adopted her so she's a little saggy in the midsection)

EDIT: Moose's avatar and sig bar are DDBs

aww SOOO cute!!! I am a doggie fanatic! I rescued my bullmastiff about 1-1/2 years ago, and the idiots at the rescue originally told me he was a 4 year old boxer mix with possible pitbull - and I had never seen a bullmastiff before, so I had no clue. Then I took him to my vet, and he laughed and said there was NO way he was a boxer or pit, and that he thinks definitely full bullmastiff... so I said ok , and then he looked at his teeth and tells me this dog is NOT 4 years old, he was maybe a year old!!! He said the shelter was definitely just guessing what he was, and basing his age off his size... wow what a shock for me!!! So then of course I had to research my baby's breed like crazy lol. And also the shelter said he would NOT be good in a home with another dog.... well, he took to my golden retriever right away, and now they are inseparable from eachother! Thanks for clarifying the DDB, I dont know all these terms !

really?! Now Im wondering if he's a mix with that instead of a presa canario.... Any way you can post a pic of the dog??? And now I wonder because I looked up the breed standards for bullmastiff, and they say he should have very minimal or preferably NO white on his chest.... and my boy def has a white patch on his chest about 4in x 6in... but then again I also read that from all the breeding over all the years, there are alot of bullmastiffs that may have "flaws" outside of the breed standards... ohhh who knows I guess... but I really wish there was at least ONE website out there with definitive guidelines between all of the molossers!
