How many of you use a holistic vet?

Poor girl. One thing I did learn while going through Kryten's elbow surgery is that there are plenty of options available for knees especially with smaller dogs. There is a group on Facebook called Orthodogs that most of its members have dogs with CCL tears. I recommend checking them out if you decide to have surgery done as they are a great knowledgeable resources but the most active members are very pro-surgery and therefore I'm not sure would be much help for CM recovery.

Oh, poor Mazey. :( :(

Definitely keep us updated on what the orthopedist says. Angus' orthopedist still said surgery was his best bet, but it doesn't hurt to go the conservative management route before committing to surgery. With that being said, Angus is proving his regular vet and the orthopedist wrong as conservative management is working for him.

Thanks, I will for sure check out that Facebook group. The orthopedic vet that we have the appointment with happens to be my ortho professor. So while I know he is extremely skilled and knowledgeable, I'm also familiar with his philosophy and know without a doubt he is going to recommend surgery. That means I need to put some serious thought into whether or not I feel like that's the best route for Mazey and how I will respond to his suggestions before we go on Wednesday. I'll admit going through with a surgery is my first instinct. That knee is really unstable, and she is so painful right now that it's difficult for me to imagine keeping her this way and waiting for it to improve on its own with rest. Right now we think it's a complete tear (I should find out for sure on Wed), which really shifts the balance away from conservative management as well. What we think happened is that she tore it partially earlier this month when she became slightly lame before her first acupuncture session. We all assumed it was just more arthritis (I'm kicking myself now). My holistic vet did do a cranial drawer test, but probably since it was likely just a partial and because Mazey was so tense, it felt ok to her. Fast forward to this weekend, she probably progressed to a complete tear on our walk. I have a lot of thinking and a lot of research to do in the next couple of days. I will for sure update after our appointment on Wednesday. Decisions, decisions, decisions for my poor girl. And I know she's not a mastiff, but thanks for sticking in there anyway. You guys are great!

I actually just switched to a holistic vet, the clinic is called Pawsitive Vet Care (pawsitive Veterinarian care | Kelowna Holistic Veterinarian)
One thing I really like about them is that they do a blood titer instead of automatic vaccinations, so your pet is only being vaccinated for what they don't already have antibodies/immunity for.
I took my Starbuck there this very morning to get an "ovary-sparing spay". They remove the whole uterus and one ovary, but they leave one ovary in so she will still gain the benefits of hormones, etc. She will still go through heat, but without the mess and with no ability to become pregnant.
I was thrilled when I found a vet near by (an hour away) that has these kinds of practices.

Good luck!

Well, Mazey will be having a TPLO done tomorrow morning. The tear is complete, that knee is super unstable, and she is still super painful, even on tramadol. By the time it might be able to stabilize itself with conservative management, that knee would be wrecked with arthritis, so we opted for the surgery. Please send your very best healing thoughts her way!

I was asked if I wanted to scrub in, but I said absolutely not. I can't be objective with my own pets, and I would be a complete wreck the entire time. The last think I need to do is burst into tears in the middle of the surgery in front of my professor, lol. They made me leave her there tonight so they can do pre-op stuff and do the surgery early tomorrow morning. Thankfully I have a really nice senior student on her case, and she's been texting me all evening letting me know she settled in, ate well, and bloodwork, etc was normal. I think they all know how worried I am.

I don't blame ya! Especially, since they all know you. Take some time tonight to get some rest. Keep things positive. Mazey will pick up on how you are doing. You both will be fine.

Big hugs!

Just heard from the surgeon. The surgery went smoothly and she is waking up in recovery right now. The meniscus was thankfully intact (we were afraid it was also torn due to how painful she was) and there were no osteophytes/beginnings of arthritis yet, so all good news there. They offered to let me come visit her in recovery this evening, but knowing how she is, I think it would just distress her if I came to visit for a minute and then left her again. So now the long wait to pick her up tomorrow!

We see an AMAZING holistic vet. She comes to the house which is great for us as our girl is very fearful out in public. She is traditionally trained, but also does accupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic and Chinese medicine and particularly focuses on muscoskeletal issues. I like the fact that she tailors the best of everything to your particular situation. She will always take the conservative treatment route, but will recommend traditional treatments where she sees necessary too which I find reassuring.
