Hyperkeratosis (crusty nose)

Does anyone else have any problems with a crusty nose. Samsons Isn't too bad but a little bit and worried about it getting worse. I've googled and it says hyperkeratosis. I've bought some nose butter which arrived today but was wondering if there was anything else I could do to make it better. Any help much appreciated
Thanks guys

Even plain vaseline will work. It doesn't have to be anything special and you don't want it to be too tasty. So something like coconut oil may not be your best bet because they lick it off. Don't let up because it seems that if your dog is prone to it, it will come back.

Thanks. Boxergirl. The nose butter must have a nice taste as he seems to be trying to lick it off (which looks quite funny lol) I'll invest in Vaseline - not so tasty

I'm curious. What are the ingredients in the nose balm you bought? I make bath and body products, so I'm always curious about stuff like that.

Our sense of 'tasty' is definitely different that the dog's... Denna likes Vicks. I'm not sure I could find a balm/butter/lotion that she wouldn't lick off.

You might try applying it right before you are going to do something with your pup...like go for a walk or a feeding.

I have one male that has just had it develop a couple of months age. I've found products like Vaseline don't really get absorbed and sit on top of the skin until it eventually wipe of. It seems vegetable base products absorb much more easily and keeps the skin softer and darker for longer. I use coconut oil.

Update on the nose - the nose butter is actually working!! Samsons nose is looking more normal now. Hardly any black crust left.
Angelbears. I did what you said and he soon forgot it was on lol
I would highly recommend this

Excellent! Glad his nose is doing better. Hopefully, it is a one and done. However, it can be seasonal, kind of like chapped lips for humans. At least now you know what to do and won't have to worry.

Can someone post a pic of this? I searched but can only find paw pics. My zeys has bumps and cracks on his nose that get infected. Previous "parents" (that gave him away) said it was plastic allergies. 3 years later its no better.

Wtfdskin - if you google "hyperkeratosis in dogs nose" click on images and you'll see lots of different pics of what it looks like. If zeys does have this then I highly recommend the nose butter. You'll see the difference in a few days. Hope this helps

I'm glad the butter is helping, Caztratt. I promise though, you don't need to special order a product to take care of it. Pretty much any oil or butter will work. You can even use lip balm, preferably something simple without flavors. I just don't like that the makers of the nose butter don't specifically say what essential oils they use. That's not good labeling practice and in a human product it could get you in trouble. You don't need EOs for hyperkeratosis and I am always very careful about using them where they can be ingested.

Carol, if you like the butter it would be pretty easy to make something very similar yourself. It's an anhydrous balm, so there wouldn't need to be any preservative. Maybe I'll play in my workroom today. I have all of the ingredients and I already make a butter that's similar. What is the consistency? Is it creamy and smooth and easy to scoop out or is it solid but melts when you touch it?

That would be great!! Thank you. It's solid in the tub so you have to scrape it out. When it goes on his nose it kinda melts in after 5 mins , which is good so it's not stuck on his nose to lick off

I mix honey, olive oil and coconut oil together in a warm pan. I make sure I have enough coconut oil in it so it will turn back to semisolid and use that on my lips and the dogs nose or elbows if they start to get pressure marks.
