I Bought a Small CC, Is He Growing Okay?

Hello all. I'm new to the community and the corso breed but I'm really enjoying our new puppy Titus. Whenever I bought him the breeder informed me that he was undersized (4lbs @ 8wks), but I decided to go with him anyway. She informed me that some catch up some stay on the small side.I was also given the option of one of the bigger pups, but declined. His brothers were 8-12lbs heavier. Since getting him he is gaining about 3lbs a week. I wanted to know if this is a healthy growth rate for a Corso puppy. He's 4 1/2 months and a little over 26 lbs. thanks in advance for the help.

My girl is the runt of her litter. When I got her from the rescue she was 18 months old and 90lbs. She just turned 4 and she's 100lbs, which is small by Corso standards but she's happy and healthy and that's all that counts

He's a great dog and the family loves him. I'm just curious how much do Corsi typically gain as puppies. Whatever his final size, he has a permanent place in our heart and home.

From my experience, and what I've read in this forum, 10lbs a month seems average for a cc. But, like with any average there are exceptions. Some grow at a more rapid pace while others grow much slower. Some break 100lbs before a year, while others never do. Like mentioned above, as long as he's happy and healthy.

I have a 4 1/2 month that is almost sixty pounds she was small compared to her littermates, I'm happy whatever size she is I'm guessing maybe 125.

I also just read on this forum that there are actually two types of corsos and Italian and American with the Italians being in the smaller size

20130922_121734.jpgHe is definitely an American. His sire is 130 and dam is 118. He was one of 12, might be the reason he was smaller. Funny that he was smaller than our Shih Tzu whenever we brought him home. Now he towers over him.

Larger litters can account for smaller pups but they generally will catch up to where they should be once out on their own without the competition at meal times, we had 11 in our last litter and while we didn't have any leaving us at 4 lbs we also did not have the 20+ lbs ones that left us with our litter of 7.

There are what people term as American and Italian lined corsos that have some differences, size being one but I would not say for sure based on the weights of the parents that he would be what is termed as American.

My situation isn't the norm. The breeder made sure I understood the different possibilities that he may or may not catch up to his littermates. I decided to stick with him because of his high drive. Playing outside with him keeps the whole family in shape. She has seen him since and said he is catching in height. I realize he will stay slender until possibly 18 months. Wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience. Thanks for all the help guys.

My 15 week old CC pup gains about 4 pounds a week and she is on the skinny, but tall side.

Your poor Shih Tzu probably thought he had it made with a dog smaller then him to boss around lol.
Is he in for a big surprise!!!

Hi Nu2Corsos, I am also new to the breed. My pup weighed 20lbs. when I first got her at 11 weeks, she is now 31lbs. at 16 weeks.

@whit72-what are you feeding that beast?

@DDSK-what's your pup's weight?he/she?

This is from a chart for the average male Corso's weight I found and the internet. The reason for the fractions is I converted it from it's original metric form. Although 20 lbs for an 8 week old puppy is very large, it kind of works after that up to 12 months but I would take it with a grain of salt. I hope it helps.

Month Weights

2 20.16
3 30.24
4 40
5 54.88
6 70.56
7 84
8 89.6
9 94.08
10 98.56
12 106.4
24 112

Sorry, the spacing between the months and the weight didn't come out right, but I think you get the idea.

For a female she is not small at all. My 2 year old female is 85 pounds. Corsos are a medium to large breed....NOT a giant breed. IMO too much focus is put on weight in this breed for some reason. Nu2Corsos- Slow and steady growth is what you want to see. Your boy could take up to 3 years to fully develop and fill out. If you are worried about his growth, don't neuter him, but if you need to, wait until he is 2.

I'm happy as long as he is healthy and happy. Just was hoping he at least tip the scales over 100lbs, but either way :D. I'm away from home a few days at a time, so each time I come home I see big changes. One week he was shorter than our lap dog, then "Max" could stand underneath him no problem. Thanks again, this is a great community. I'm glad I stumbled onto this site.
