Introducing Enzo

I've posted a few questions and browsed through a ton of posts, I think its about time I introduce Enzo.

He's 15 weeks old (and 30lbs) and is (in my opinion) the cutest CC puppy ever. He's the first mastiff for our family and has been quite a handful. He developed HOD at 12 weeks but is now back into full blown puppy mode...everything is food and everything is a game. Due to the HOD we had to reschedule his puppy classes, but those will be starting next month. I have never met such an attentive, expressive dog.

He is gorgeous! What an adorable face!! Was it you that posted about your boy with HOD? If you don't mind me asking, did they do anything for him besides pain meds/anti-inflammatories and IV fluids? About how long did it take for the pain to resolve? Thanks, I'm just curious! Also love your pitties, I'm quite partial to them as well.

Yes that was me. He was on IV pain meds and anti-inflammatories for a few days and they werent doing anything for him. The vet, on her own time, read through a ton of case studies and told me that some people had good results from prednisone and asked if they could try that. Within 24 hours of his first dose he was noticibly better. He lost a lot of muscle mass in his back end and some weight but he is back in full blown crazy puppy mode now. He got sick on 12/12 and weighed 30lbs, he just finally hit 30.5lbs last night.

I am also curious about the parents. I read that typically the only mastiffs who are in the risk group for it are Great Danes.

enzo_canecorso: Good to hear he's doing so much better and thanks for answering my questions! I've been told steroids supposedly tremendously and rapidly help in HOD cases, but it's just the weighing of pros and major cons of giving steroids to a pup, so that's why I was curious what your outcome was. Once again, he's beautiful and looking forward to more photos!

CaneCorsoLover: Unfortunately there's no good testing for HOD, it's just a matter of if the dog develops it as a pup and then choosing whether or not that dog is included in a breeding program. There's not even any good evidence that it's a heritable condition, although since some breeds are a bit more predisposed, I'd bet there are at least some type of genetic component at work. Proposed causes (with some limited evidence) include some type of autoimmune response, overnutrition or supplementation, a response to vaccination, or even bacteremia, but no one actually knows yet.

Sorry, I feel like that comment wasn't very clear. I meant that there is no test at all that can tell you if parents who never developed HOD may produce pups who will. A simple radiograph is quite accurate to diagnose it once it's actually present in a pup though.

Can I ask if the pup was purchased from a reputable breeder with health checked parents? That's a serious disease.

He came from a great breeder who has been nothing short of amazing through this whole thing. I wouldnt hesitate in getting another puppy from him some day. His parents were health checked and are completely healthy, beautiful dogs. From what I understand, HOD is kind of a fluke thing. The emergency vet who has been with us through this whole process has only seen a handful of HOD puppies in her 14 years. He did have a little bit of a puppy cold (I assume from the flying in) when he got his 3rd set of vaccinations and we also were feeding him Origin puppy food. There is really no way to know why it hit him like it did. His littermates are all fine and I am thankful that now he is too. We had his 2nd follow up with the ER vet last night and she said his x-rays were much better than she had expected them to look.

Thanks for all the compliments, he is pretty great.

My Oh MY - What a FACE!!!!

He's Sooooo expressive. Absolutely adorable!
Glad he's feeling better, too!

Prednisone is marvelous stuff - I took it for a major allergic reaction a few years ago (hopefully you don't need it long term, though).

I have seen random cases in any number of large breeds but I also have heard of a litter that produced 3 or 4 pups in one litter with HOD and was bred a couple more times to the same male but did not hear if the issues cropped up in follow-up litters.

Thank you so much TLuna, we are glad that he is getting better as well. Although, we kind of miss the more docile/snuggly version of him...now he's full speed all the time. =]
