Is it weird that I have "size envy" of those of you with pure DDBs? :-)

He is gorgeous!

DDBs come in all sizes anyway... My girl is purebred and pedigreed and is very lean and athletic and on the smaller size for a DDB (around 90lb). Instead of being stocky, she has lean muscle - still solid, but doesn't look like a "standard" DDB. People are always telling me she is small for a DDB, even though her head comes up to my hip (I'm 5'10"). Less of the wrinkles too, as she gets older. So you might be able to get a "smaller" DDB and still be able to lift them... A least, that's how you could pitch it to your partner :D

@Ginurse - He is SO cute!!!!! There is a fluffy DDB I've seen pictures of in my state. She looks like the flying dragon out of the Neverending Story. Love the fluffy ears!

I would love to see a pic of a fluffy DDB (I didn't know they existed). :)

DDSK - Oh they are on my wish list for certain. So far I have been vetoed by Sean on that count... He says that I need to be able to physically lift and carry any dog we get. But I have at least two years before we are ready for another pup so I consider that two years of time to convince him. I've also been putting in more time at the gym with the weights. lol Have to attack the battle from all directions of course and hey two years time is realistic for that. :p

. <3

There is something to that idea of being able to pick up your dog if you had to. My solution is finding a vet that will make house calls. :).

I borrowed this early photo of the amazing fluffy eared DDB I saw... Apparently they are getting fluffier with age :)

Hahahaha...that is so cute.

Bella is my fluffy EM (she has quite the undercoat and sheds like a demon) and Sage is much slicker.

Diesel is gorgeous! Our girl is pure DDB, and we call her our teacup mastiff. Growth charts were way off when she was a pup, with the vet telling us to expect her to top out at 60 lbs. Now just over two, Like KMD's girl, ours weighs in at between 90 - 100 lbs, and is pure lean muscle. That falls under breed show standards I believe, but she's not the showgirl-type or temperament anyway. She is mostly very healthy, and in the morning when she loves to lie on top of me fully stretched out for cuddles, my rib cage thanks the powers-that-be that she is relatively wee! I'm 5'3" and she hugs me 'til she's good and done!

Yamizuma - Your girl is just beautiful!!! :) Our Diesel is still just 65 lbs but isn't yet a year so I suppose there is some hope he may hit 70. lol :)

He's a great looking dog, and I can absolutely guarantee you there is NO dog out there that is concerned over it's own size - that's just a human thing :) .

I totally hear ya! The giant breeds have always been my favourite. I have dog books from when I was little and I would circle my favourite breeds and it was always the EM, BM and DDB (although that has changed, I still love the giants). With that being said, I own a 26 pound SBT and a 70-80 pound mutt. Haha, I love Angus to bits and pieces and people used to comment that he's a large dog and whatever. Then I see my friends with their EM's or Corso's or DDB's and I'm like, "I might as well call Angus a teacup mutt and put him in a purse. He's TINY!"

I think I get envious because I have been waiting for my BB for almost a year now and it's just one big guessing game at this point as to when I'll actually have my little BB bundle of joy. hahaha

as others have said, having a purebred does not guarantee a "big" mastiff. My boy Kujo is now 3 years old and a whopping 100 pounds. I personally LOVE that he's not one of the "big" guys, but my boyfriend shares your "size envy" and wishes he were bigger. More importantly, he's healthy and has excellent body condition, can't ask for better than that :)

Yes size envy is unusual for a woman that is something usually reserved for men or Caitlan Jenner ;)
