Hello Everyone.

Im just about to rescue a beautiful 10 month old Mastino "Cody"

https://scontent-fra3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=eefb521f17bc896e66da70dd65def10b&oe=5587D937

Ive researched a lot about Neos and there personalities however I am hearing a lot of different opinions on feeding.

Cody is definitely underweight at the moment as a result from previous owner neglect (5 of his siblings had to be put down).

Most of what Ive read is avoid protein and try and feed him 250-300g of dry food 3 times a day?

whilst others say chicken is really good for them and other carb foods aswell which I generally thought were bad for a dog?

Any success stories are welcome..

PS. Although his blood line is very obscure he is going to be a very large dog possibly 60kg +.

Welcome!
Cody is a good lookin' dog! :)

On food - Protein is no longer the 'bad guy'... Grains and other 'empty carbs' are not needed or even recommended, either - so your thought, that they're bad for a dog, is also what most of us here agree with. Some dogs do fine with grains, but many don't.

I'd suggest you find a high quality kibble (check out 4 and 5 star foods available in your area at dogfoodadvisor.com) and stick with it for a while to see how your dog adjusts to it. Try not to add too much variety too fast (can cause "system upset" and diarrhea).

Lots of people here like Acana or Earthborn Holistics, but there are lots of good options out there - and what's available will depend on where you're located, too.

If you're interested in home-prepared food... like real chicken... check out the raw-feeding sub-forum here on the page, or google "whole prey model raw" and see if that's something you'd be able to do. It takes some work to get setup, but it's a great way to feed your canine companion.

Also... even if he's under-weight and under-nourished, try not to over-feed him too much too fast... keep him lean and coax him over to his new, better diet. Going too far, too fast can cause stress on the system, which is not what you want to do. Keeping him calm and relaxed during his move to your home will help him adjust faster, too.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hi! I just adopted a Neo myself, and he also needs to gain a little bit of weight (about 10 lbs). He's been eating grain-free foods--Taste of the Wild kibble (the salmon one) mixed with either Canidae or Innova large breed canned food (both of those canned foods have chicken though, in case you were trying to avoid chicken). I've been feeding him 2.5 cups twice a day since he won't eat any more than that, and trying to add in little extras like cheese, chunks of turkey, boiled eggs, or even pieces of bread (this guy loves bread!). He seems to be putting on a little bit of weight slowly.

Good luck to you! Can't wait to hear about Cody!
