Looking for breeders near NYC area.

Hello all,

I am interested in buying an English Mastiff puppy. I am considering Beowulf Mastiffs near Syracuse New York. Does anyone have any knowledge of this breeder or have others in the area they would recommend?

Thanks.

I know theres been discussion of them on here before. Do a search for "beowulf" AND "beowolf" to find the discussions. IIRR their requirements of their puppy buyers border on insane by requiring their pups be fed a specific brand of food or else they won't honor the health portions of the contract.

Because I'm incapable of not looking closer at breeders....looking closer at the site:

They list a litter due mid Oct, dam: Beowulfs Beyond Thyme "Infinity", which means she would have had to have been bred early to mid August, however according to the OFA database Infinity was born 5/2/2012, which means she was barely one year old when they bred her. The MCA requires that breeders not breed bitches before they're 22months old, and in general its considered a bad idea to breed them before the age of 2years as many of the required health tests can't be done untill that time.

Beowulfs Rich N Bold "Sumatra" is also being bred for mid Oct, and according to the OFA she's only ever had her cardiac and patella tests done? Now true, hips can be done Pennhip, but the rest of the health tests are usually listed in the OFA database.

And Beowulfs Just Showin Off "Posh" is the same with only the addition of her CERF exam.

Just based on that I'm fairly unimpressed with them frankly.

Hmmm, thanks for that. You're right that's not encouraging. I'll keep looking thanks. Do you happen to have any recommendations within a 5 hour drive or so of NYC?

Not off the top of my head, I do TMs not EMs. However there is a show in Syracuse mid Nov, and there's always a ton of Mastiffs on site, the fact that Beowulf is local is likely part of that, but they're not the only ones there. OR, THIS link should get you an AKC listing of all planned conformation events within a few state radius of NY. Clicking the name of the hosting club will get you a list of how many dogs of what breeds attentended last year, so you can get an idea of what to expect for attendence this year, if any of them are convient for you to hit they're a GREAT way to see a variety of dogs and potentially talk to a variety of breeders. Make note of dogs you like, and get breeder names when possible, then do some research (or post them on here and we'll help you) to figure out who might be good to buy from!
