Ok, last comment because I think it may help you as you have young children. My Dane came from a breeder and I did not get him until 10months old. He basically lived in the situation you would keep your dog. He was in a kennel (with other dogs) most of the day and had little bouts of interaction throughout the day. Unfortunately his upbringing has made him a bit of a handful. He is very reactive to my kids to the point that he has to be kept on leash when the kids are really wild because he gets way too excited. A 120lb dog who is overly excited is dangerous around small children (can easily knock them over and they hit their head on something). He did not spend enough time living with kids up to 10months to get used to their crazy ways at times. If you want a dog that is going to be trustworthy with your kids, it needs to spend significant time with your kids. My boy is a good dog but his environment growing up really kept him from being an excellent dog. I am working my butt of to make up for lost time and after 3 months I am starting to see major improvement but it is taking lots of work. I am working with a trainer and spending significant time exercising and training. A dog, especially during the first year of life, needs proper socialization and obedience training and that just cannot be done living in a doghouse.
