naughty stage!

Hey everyone! So Lola, my previously quite obedient 8months DDB, has hit this stage of naughtiness! I was wondering if/when this may happen. She certainly is testing us on everything! It was as if over night, she "forgot" all the commands she learned months ago! For example, she has been trained that we do not put the leash on her until she sits and stays. With consistent training early on, she picked this up in no time. But now even that she hesitates to obey. Any suggestions as to the best way to deal with this "phase" and how long will this last?! Look forward to hearing your suggestions

I went back to the basics in training and any privileges that he had earned he lost until he earned them again. I know with Kryten one day when he was 7 months he went to sleep my wonderful, sweet boy and woke up untrained and defiant. While it improved with training he continued to be defiant in various ways until he was 12 months when the reverse happened. He went to sleep a brat and woke up well behaved. The most important thing to remember is patience is a virtue and you'll need a lot of it.

Like Smokeycat said, patience is a virtue. Remain consistent in training. The teenager will mature one day...

Good advice everyone, thank you! So far we have done pretty much what you all suggested. Baby gates are back in action and we've kind of went back to the basics. My poor boxer is even like "WTH?" at some of the stuff she does lol

KimT- I literally LOL at your comment

I have 4 basic rules for mine. My house is NOT your toilet, no biting,no fighting and don't eat my house.lol. Anything more than that is icing on the cake. :lolbangtable:

There is a definate spike in surrenders at teenage.
so nope, definately not alone.
Its not DDB's, its dogs. Hang on, kids too, maybe many species then?

I went into drill seargant mode to survive, implemented NILF, TOT. And had to walk off, and step away from the dog, often.

Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!

On a broader note, I have to be honest, I am enjoying these posts about these pups who are now hitting the naughty stage. For a while there it seemed like everyone was introducing us to their sweet, adorable, well behaved puppies while I was up to my elbows in pimply teenager who tested everything I said and pushed every limit I set. I was soooo jealous.

I was getting concerned that Zeek might be missing one or two of his marbles. It's just nice to know that for a while there, they all loose it. :p

I went back to basics to and worked NILIF like a Sargent as well. I also did small, frequent training drill through out the day (almost like you did when the puppy was really little like 8-10 week stage when they were all A.D.D). Treats or a toy went everywhere with me and the leash was a permanent fixture on my Teenager most days lol.

Than I Drank A LOT because quite frankly I was at my wits end LOL. The only safe time was when he was sleeping but than again you could barely walk by without him waking up and letting out a growl.... good times now that I am reminiscing.

And if push comes to shove, you rehome it, i come along and scoop up a wonderful teenage pedigree dog, that just needs some guidance, firm boundaries and a very short rope for next to nothing. That comes good in 4 weeks!

Bargain!

I have been 'given' all my rotties ive owned cept one. All of them around the 9 month mark.

Aw, well get through it. Not too concerned and we are already seeing improvements daily. Plus I talked the hubby into fencing in our backyard so they have even more room to run and play :)

I wore mouth shaped bruises on my butt, thighs, arms like they were the latest fashion accessory. I found myself staring in horror the minute I would see Kronos run to me and shrieking soft! soft! soft! And yes all the while reading the adorable sweet natured puppy stories and oo and ahhing over each sweet faced addition that was posted. But at the same time doing a fiendish laugh and saying to the screen I can't wait to see your posts in 6 months because then it will be your turn lol
