Neapolitan Mastiff Puppies

Okay, so I had a very busy weekend and wanted to share a few pictures with you. My friend breeds Neapolitan Mastiffs, just a small breeder, just starting out. Her female Lexie whelped her litter last night and since it was the first for my friend, I went down to help her out. She had it under control for the most part and Lexie was a pro with the first three puppies. The fourth was more difficult and passed away, she couldn't revive him. Then the fifth was stuck so both the vet and I arrived shortly after each other. We managed to assist in whelping the fifth, but he had passed away as well. Also assisted with the sixth, who is a healthy, beautiful black boy. The vet was hoping she would start popping them out after the sixth was whelped but after about an hour and a half it was decided it was time for an emergency C-Section.

Since it was so late, my friend and I had to assist the vet and the technician with everything so that was great. I have wanted to attend a c-section for a while but had never the opportunity (which is good). So that was very interesting. During the c-section, we were given 5 puppies to revive. It looked like we had lost 3 of them so we were a bit discouraged but with some determination, we revived all of the puppies. Just as we were getting the 5 pups situated, the vet found a sixth and final puppy and handed him to me. The monster of the group at almost a 100 grams heavier than the heaviest pup we already had. Thankfully we revived him, took the puppies back home, got them situated, went back and grabbed momma, brought her back and spent the next few hours getting her situated and the puppies feeding. Then I had an hour drive back to my house in a snowstorm at 3 in the morning. (Took me two hours because I went at a snail's pace.)

Pups are doing excellent today. Mom is eating and attending to the puppies and she feels so much better. She had 13 puppies but lost two so now my friend has 11 puppies.

Okay, sorry for the long story. Just very eventful. Here are the photos that I promised.

All the puppies before we brought momma home.

Goliath. This was the big boy who we think was causing all the problems. Also the last pup out at the c-section.

My personal favorite. We called him Mighty Mouse. The smallest pup but he has the strongest voice and is one of the first to latch properly.

And a little girl.

And just two more puppies to see.

The tawny male (only tawny we have. I really like him too.)

And the Mahogany Male (only mahogany)

All the sheets with the labelling was for me. I was taking the pictures but it was so late and I was so tired that I didn't think I would remember who was who when I uploaded the pictures this morning. It also made it easier to post on her facebook page, which is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lexington-Kennels/253708281374885, if you want to see more puppy pictures and videos.

Okay, thanks for letting me rave. It is so exciting and so wonderful that everything went well. We got really worried that we were going to lose Lexie there for a little bit and my friend would have been absolutely devastated if she had. Lexie is her girl through and through.

Thanks everyone. Yes, my friend prefers the more athletic Neos and not the big wrinkled ones that some breeders have been doing. Actually, the breeder she purchased Lexie from had purchased a wrinkled one and by the time she was 2 years old, she had had to have something like 4 surgeries to reduce the amount of wrinkles around and on her face. The quality of life was bad for the dog because it just couldn't function with that many wrinkles. There were so many, the dog could barely breath. She never used it in her breeding program but spayed her and focused on the more athletic Neos.

Oh, they are all gaining very well, btw. Some up as much as 69 grams in one day (little porkers). :)

That's sad poor girl, I really wish some breeders would "get it" how is having that many wrinkles a good thing? We as people want to remove any trace of aging as possible on our skin yet its ok to go overboard with the dogs. Sorry end rant.

Keep us posted as the pups progress, very cute!

Glad some breeders are coming to their senses, if only they would change the standard... you can still have a Neo that looks like a Neo, with some wrinkling without going crazy and taking it to the extreme!

Yes, I agree. Funny thing is that Lexie does well in the show ring and her sister (who is her twin, completely identical) won her championship in one weekend. So I think the judges that they are running into are prefering the more athletic and less wrinkled Neos.

wow what an experience. I know I could never be a breeder, couldn't handle watching my baby go thru the difficulty of birthing etc, etc, so I have to hand it to those who are able to do it responsibly.

So will the tawny and mahogany pups stay that color? I've only ever seen Neos as blue.

My Ex's Neo is brindle, I just think that blue is probably most common.
