It has to do with teh way your brain has been trained to "see" faces. So your brain assumes, because its a face, that the eye on the right is closer to you (ie: a convex shape), but because its really further away (a concave shape) it results in the perfect optical illusion.

Training-----Well I'm screwed then my brain is untrainable and that damed T Rex is gonna eat me!
