Puppy Advice

Hello everyone. I am working on training my puppy Magic is 3 months old and I am crate training. I am still having issues with her sneaking off and peeing in the house. She is also very nippy. I have her scheduled for puppy training at petsmart but was hoping you could give me some suggestions.

Get a 15 foot long line and use it as your house leash, keep it tied to you so when she runs off out of your site you can bring her back to you.
On house breaking you need to be taking that puppy out ever 20 mins to an hour so it learns to have to go outside.

Nipping ... Well is se coming up and biting? Is she nipping when you give treats? Is she nipping when you are playing?

About PetSmart ---- GET YOUR MONEY BACK. They are not trainers, they have no formal training, no behavioral training. They only get a little certificate from PetSmart saying they are a Pet Trainer...
Find a actual trainer in your area, you are better off spending a little more money and having the puppy trained right the first time then wasting money and having to spend more for problems you wouldn't have had the first time.

Well she is crated at night so thats about 8-9 hours. And when I leave the house I'm never usually away for more than 3 hours or so during the day. When I am home I tried to have her out so she is not locked up too much.I take her to go her outside hourly and right after she eats

She is nipping when playing and sometimes she will just walk up to you and nip. Right now the nip isn't much since she is a puppy but as she grows older it can become a problem as I have two small daughters, a pug, and a chihuahua and I don't want her to hurt anyone. I was unaware of that in regards to petsmart training. Do you have any tips on how to find a trainer. I am very hesitant about doing craigslist adds and things of that sort

How long are you outside when you take her to go potty?

When she goes to bite you .. Scream ouch .. This will scare the puppy just as the mother of the pup did when the pup did something wrong .. When she stops praise her with voice (good girl) and touch

Do you live in the states?
If so what state and city?
How far are you willing to drive?

I can possibly help you find a trainer

I have been doing the scream thing when she bites and I tell the kids as soon as she bites stop playing with her so that she knows that behavior won't be rewarded. I live in Severn Maryland

Ok the other thing you can do is when you get the leash on her (needs to have on while running around) not in crate. Pop the leash and firm NO BITE when she lets go.. Praise her

Ok let me see what I can find for you on trainers, I know lots there .. Give me a day or two :)

This is really good advice from all. My Gracie is also 3 months old and she is doing a lot of the same things. I did the 15 foot leash and it really does work, and I also take her out a lot during the day. She has had the occational accident, but I think that it is going to happen. Just don't fuss at her or get on her when and if she goes in the house, for this will cause them to fear potty time, and will want to sneak off even more so than ever.

We didn't use the leash inside for Denna, but we did put baby gates everywhere, so she was always well supervised. When we were potty training, I'd keep her in the home office with me (a 10x10 small guest room) with a baby gate to block the door. Most of the time she spent curled up under the desk on my feet. When she started wandering around, I knew it was time for a trip outside (about every 1-2 hours). On the nipping issue - we used the "yipe" sound, like a fellow littermate. If that didn't work, a "careful" in a low growly tone like a momma dog would make would normally do the trick. Having all play-time stop, like you're doing is a great method, too. Denna is 10 months old now and has a very soft mouth. She'll still grab your hand when playing, but very gently, and if you yipe now, she'll spit it out and lick it instead.
