it does , but I believe any dog food companies that have a clue have taken calories into account ..... a popular food is orijen , the original version I believe 449kcal per cup ..........eukanuba large breed is 337 kcal per cup , hill's 353 , diamond 342 , purina one 361 , eagle pack 330 , purina puppy chow 372 ........ orijen large breed puppy 483 kcal per cup , makes me wonder if they have a clue what their doing ????? fromm large breed puppy 400 kcal per cup ????? if I got to pick someone I don't think know's what their doing it'd be orijen and fromm ........

I also don't think all calories are created equal. I generally make sure the calcium and phosphorus levels are correct and then look at the breakdown of ingredients and their label placement to compare foods. I also take into account the carbohydrates in a food. I raised two type 1 diabetic daughters - carbs and their source are always a thing for me because I know the effect they can have on the body.

I think when it comes to dogs , proteins and fats are the more useful ingredients ...... protein for building their bodies , and fat for energy ... carbohydrates in dog food are not that useful to dog , they do supply energy , just not the best type .......in dog food I think the source of carbohydrates is most often grains , rice , corn , I don't ever recall seeing it be any type of sugar .......... phosphorus and calcium ratios are pretty much what the original large breed formulas were made to satisfy ....... as far as the amount taken in , those amounts are given as percentages , the adult dog foods like orijen recommend feeding a puppy 1 1/2 to 2 times the adult amount of food when feeding their adult food to a puppy ..... so while the ratio stays the same , a pup would take in 2-4 times the amount of calcium and phosphorus as a pup eating eukanuba large breed puppy food .........
