Question for a breeder

The breeder I purchased Cyrus from provided registration papers, which is good, but there's an area she had checked and signed stating:

I (we) still own this dog and apply for registration and to have ownership recorded in my (our) names(s)

Can somebody please explain this to me, because the way I take it, is....if I register Cyrus through AKC it will the breeders name as the owner.

is he a pet quality dog?
They may not sign over ownership until proof of spay/neuter...
Did you ask them?

Not sure What you mean by pet quality, he's not show quality...or wasn't meant to be. There was no mention of neutering when I got him. I emailed the breeder asking the same question a week ago, no response yet.

Most reputable breeders have 2 "qualities" of dogs that they sell.
There is show, meaning they fit into the standard and have that "it" factor that the breeder is looking to create. These dogs are usually what the breeder will want to use in the next generation of their program.
Then there are "pet quality", does not mean that they do not fit into the standard necessarily, they (at the time the breeder makes the decision) do not have the specific traits the breeder is looking for for their program. It doesn't mean that they aren't great dogs, and very often turn out fantastic, is hard for a breeder to determine at 8 weeks.
These dogs are hopefully sold under a spay/neuter contract by the breeder.
In every litter of dogs there are both, well actually some litters should all just be pet quality, but very few breeders will do that.
Only few dogs should ever be bred, and if they are it should be done in a responsible way to better the breed.
I hope that clarifies what I meant :)

If he is a pet quality and you aren't neutering him they they might want him recorded under their name as it would prevent you from being able to register puppies if the dog is bred. Not saying you would but that might be one of the reasons. There is only one person that can answer this and that is your breeder, if you are getting a response by email then call before signing anything and ask.

JRT2006, did you ever find out the answer to this question?? Our breeder if our pup was to be a pet quality puppy, she would be on the AKC Registration so we can not breed our boy but when he gets neutered at the age of 24 months (standard age for EM's) then she will sign over full AKC Reg on him but not until then!!
Hope this helps if you never got an answer :)
