I need some raw training treats for Rhys ... Ive heard of some baking kidney or liver ...... I was thinking of trying this, cutting into small cubes ... but on what temp & how long should I bake it for?

I too was told about liver and had a very bad experience recently...I boiled it and baked it at 350 until it was rather dry and chopped it up into cubes and my boy loved it at training class but was sick for 2 days afterwards...in talking with others liver is rather hard on alot of dogs systems and I guess I have one of them...he had diarrhea and was vomiting for almost 48 hours it was really scary...maybe try it in small amounts beforehand and see how his system tolerates it...Just a thought I wish I had known this beforehand...I use turkey weiners and bake them well and then chop them up also fast fry steak or chicken can be baked and cut up...

Good to know about liver, certainly dont want him puking/pooping like that. Maybe I'll just bake a chicken breast & tear up into bite size pieces. Thanks! Or I'll pick up some turkey wienies, :)

No problem I certainly wouldn't want you to go through what I did either... I'm constantly looking for new ideas as well of all natural training treats so I will keep you posted of anything else that I find that works...

yah, my dogs get diarrhea from to much liver too, which is to bad cause they love it.

If you have a food dehydrator (or don't mind tying up your oven for at least 6hrs possibly longer) you can dehydrate pretty much any kind of meat you want. I regularly dry bite size peices of beef and chicken (and have done pork, turkey, lamb, venison) as training and general use treats for my two. Thinner, longer peices work better than cubes (they dry faster) and you can always tear them appart if you need them to be smaller. I like them cause they don't crumble or smush and I can shove a handfull in my pocket without worrying about it (they do get gross though if you forget they're in your pocket and put the jeans in the wash....just fyi....)

Ebony was always fine on liver; we actually used a stackable food dehydrator and cut it up after it was dry. Worked pretty well but still smelled a bit. The other thing you might try is cheese, especially if you can get the cheapo "ends" packages at the grocery. They're not pretty but they taste the same, plus they pack pretty well as long as it's not horribly hot out. Oscar would do just about anything for a small cheese cube.
Something that worked on Ebony but not on Oscar: dried banana chips. You can generally buy them in bulk at the grocery, and although they're not MEAT raw, they are a nice non-processed food treat that's pretty healthy and not at all messy.

I love the banana chips idea as I have a fruit lover and was wondering about trying that...I also thought I might try using a food dehydrator for other fruits as well and see how that goes...

If you want to stick to raw (thus uncooked) you can also cut up meat in treat sized pieces, put it on a cookie sheet lined in paper towel and leave it uncovered in the fridge until it dehydrated naturally.

I bake beef liver on 350 for 20 minutes. Yes, feeding too much can cause diarrhea. Titan gets one piece for training and he does very well on one piece. But if I feed him chicken hears and gizzards with his meal, I cannot give him beef liver too. Diarrhea. I feed him one or the other.

I'll try what you suggested OHF. Great idea!
