I use a tearless puppy shampoo that I picked up at petsmart. It has a fresh scent but it's not overpowering. If not that maybe a baby shampoo? Something that will be sensitive enough for his skin & if you accidentally get it in his eyes then it won't hurt him. One thing I'd recommend is using a soft kleenex to wipe out the insides of his ears incase any water goes in them. I've seen a lot of floppy earred dogs get ear infections pretty quick just from the moisture that had been sitting in their ears.
If your area is bad with fleas (I know I am battling this right now & it sucks) then I would lean more towards frontline plus. Maybe only order 1-2 vials if you can as he is a growing puppy & I'm sure you don't want to order too much of a certain size since he will outgrow them fast. If you're looking for flea/tick coverage then I'd go with the advantix. Only thing I'd recommend with that is if you have cat(s) in the household keep the puppy away from them until the liquid has dried completely. I've never heard of it happening but Advantix is toxic to cats if they ingest it. Never heard of a cat running up to a dog to lick the advantix off but as the liquid dries it disperses across the body so you never know...

Ahhhh HA! I would look into purchasing a capstar pill for him then treating him with a topical flea preventative. Capstar is an oral pill that will start killing the fleas within 20-30 minutes & it lasts for 24 hours. If you are going to be bathing him today you can give the capstar before the bath. However, when I worked for the 2 clinics I did they highly recommended waiting no less than 48 hours before or after a bath before applying topical flea preventative. I'd see if you can visit the vet you plan to take him to & see if they will sell you 1 capstar pill & 1 frontline or advantix vial. They should be able to sell you these things over the counter & not require seeing him for an exam.
As far as your house goes, I'd vacuum carpet & wash bedding. If the flea problem reoccurs, then I'd look into getting your yard treated.
P.S. FLEAS SUCK!
