Scab like places on neck?

I just noticed Bruno has a huge area on his neck near his ear where it feels scabby, but when I look at it you can't really see anything. They are itchy to him. He has a smaller one near it and one on his chest. I am ordering him flea and tick meds, could it be a severe reaction to flea bites? Or possibly mosquito bites? His appt is the first week in September so if they are still there I will be mentioning it. I never had a dog allergic to fleas or anything so I'm looking for some tips. Thank you

Oh and for size, the big one is about the size of a half dollar, the smaller ones about a dime.

This might not help but my dads dog gets similar things. It actually turned out he has a sensitivity to my dads grass. So when he goes outside you have to rub his stomach and chest with baby wipes or he'll scratch , after about a week of baby wipes they get better and he stops.

He only has them on the top side of his neck though, by his ears. Then one on his chest, there's not too much grass out there either :/ hmm... Thank you for the suggestion!

If he had fleas at some point & had been scratching at those areas, this might could explain the scabs... which type of flea preventative are you ordering for him? There are some products that I have found to not work that well.

Just out of curiousity, why are you waiting until September to take him to the vet?

Maybe he is scratching at his ears? Do you see any sort of black/brownish colored debris inside the ear?

Put him on something white, then very lightly scratch that area. If little black flecks or fleas fall off then you know your problem. Also check at the top of the base of his tail, the same way.

Nope no flea poop or ear mites :/

His 12 week appt is the beginning of September. They don't seem to be bothering him at all, either. I'm honestly not even sure if they were there when we got him or not, I know his breeder said the pups played a little rough and he had a scab on his back. Could him itching it just make it bigger?

That's strange. Maybe he has some sort of environmental allergy? Those were really the only things I could think of as far as having the scabs in the areas you mentioned. Not really sure about the spot on his chest. My first thought would be yes him scratching/itching at those areas may make them worse. Did the breeder apply any type of topical flea or heartworm preventative? I've seen dogs that have severe allergic reactions to the liquid in those topical preventatives & cause spots/scabbing/hairloss in the places around where the liquid was applied.

She said they out some 7 dust on him before we picked him up, but that was two weeks ago... I was going to order him some (frontline or advantage, I think)

I think I'm going to give him a bath today. Does anyone have any recommendations for good or soothing shampoos?

I use a tearless puppy shampoo that I picked up at petsmart. It has a fresh scent but it's not overpowering. If not that maybe a baby shampoo? Something that will be sensitive enough for his skin & if you accidentally get it in his eyes then it won't hurt him. One thing I'd recommend is using a soft kleenex to wipe out the insides of his ears incase any water goes in them. I've seen a lot of floppy earred dogs get ear infections pretty quick just from the moisture that had been sitting in their ears.

If your area is bad with fleas (I know I am battling this right now & it sucks) then I would lean more towards frontline plus. Maybe only order 1-2 vials if you can as he is a growing puppy & I'm sure you don't want to order too much of a certain size since he will outgrow them fast. If you're looking for flea/tick coverage then I'd go with the advantix. Only thing I'd recommend with that is if you have cat(s) in the household keep the puppy away from them until the liquid has dried completely. I've never heard of it happening but Advantix is toxic to cats if they ingest it. Never heard of a cat running up to a dog to lick the advantix off but as the liquid dries it disperses across the body so you never know...

Ahhhh HA! I would look into purchasing a capstar pill for him then treating him with a topical flea preventative. Capstar is an oral pill that will start killing the fleas within 20-30 minutes & it lasts for 24 hours. If you are going to be bathing him today you can give the capstar before the bath. However, when I worked for the 2 clinics I did they highly recommended waiting no less than 48 hours before or after a bath before applying topical flea preventative. I'd see if you can visit the vet you plan to take him to & see if they will sell you 1 capstar pill & 1 frontline or advantix vial. They should be able to sell you these things over the counter & not require seeing him for an exam.

As far as your house goes, I'd vacuum carpet & wash bedding. If the flea problem reoccurs, then I'd look into getting your yard treated. :)

P.S. FLEAS SUCK! :p

Thanks for the info! Where can you get capstar, other than the vet? I have to say, I havent seen a single flea on him since we got him. So strange!!

I haven't seen it sold at any places other than vet's offices. You might could order it online. It comes in 2 sizes. Dogs for 2-25 lbs & 25 lbs & over. I think I read a post that said he weighed 22 lbs? If that's so, I'd go ahead & go with the larger size. It's a relatively safe pill & it won't hurt him to have the bigger size.

Oh & stay farrrrrr away from Hartz (usually find this at walmart) flea products. Their products have caused serious reactions in some cases & even death. So I would definitely not use their products!

Alright, thank you for the information! I know the smallest the sell the flea meds is a pack of 3, so maybe we will have to take a trip to the vet today or Monday.

Petsmart does sell capstar. I would recommend a nice oatmeal based shampoo to help sooth his itchy skin. And ditto on Hartz their main ingredient is permethian which can be toxic. My vet tech says to remember if the ingredient says per(methian) its bad and pymethian its ok because pie is good for you & me. Stupid rhyme but good reminder and fyi my spelling might be a bit off! Usually when checking for fleas you comb the hair at the base of the tail and look for flea poop, little black specks that look like dirt. My guy is on Revolution for fleas and heartworms in one! Seems to be working ok.

Dawn detergent is great for killing fleas and lot less chemicals than flea shampoo. Wash with Dawn and then wash with their regular shampoo.

when Juno had that spot on her leg the other week the vet told me to make sure she didn't develop anymore anywhere else as it could be a sign of Demodex. Scared the snots out of me. Just some info I thought I would pass on. We give our dogs Comfortis from the vet. we went with Comfortis because the fleas are so bad this year nothing else was working.
